Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

    Oil always changed on time
    Vehicle at 110,000kms
Recently changed spark plugs to try to counter this
Sent vehicle for EGR to be cleaned though I don’t think they did it properly because I got back the car in less than 40 mins including other maintenance.

Proper cleaning takes at least 3hrs.When knocking occurs add some acceleration to rid noise faster.

After checking some other threads on the forum, they suggested that the car could be burning oil... checked my oil and it was down to the second dot on the stick!! Rectifying that today.

Is the EGR cleaning the only thing suggested/recommended for this??

Plus a leak-down test, if the knocking persists.

Bear in mind the intake manifold is the last leg of the EGR circuit, needs cleaning too. A casual request EGR cleaning, and the car’s back to you in 40 minutes, says to me you still have a job to do. I’d strongly recommend DIY, more info in “bad flywheel” link in my signature.

All said, 110k kms is pretty early for head gasket to let go; getting on the cleaning ASAP you may be out of the woods.

Thank you kindly for all your input.
I was honestly dreading the DIY because I need to buy a few things and it's so much work

But say what... Anything to keep Priya going.

There’s a T-SB on rattle upon cold soak. Check with local dealer regarding warranty eligibility…

EGR cooler clean took me 2days. 3hrs to take it apart, more than 24hrs to soak-in the EGR cooler and after that, I took it to car wash spray with water compressor and 4-5hrs to pull it back.

Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean. Also I bought this car RORO so they won't honor any warranty here.

This is not motivating me to do this lol

(I don't know what RORO means)?

USA Toyota dealer service departments should be able to pull the Technical Service Bulletins.

    (Applicable to USA 2012 - 2015 PHV, 2012 - 2016 "V" yes they capitalized it but I interpret as wagon, and 2010 - 2015 Prius).

    T-SB-0103-12 Rev2 which was updated September 8, 2016.

"MIL "ON" DTC P2111 and P0A0F After Cold Soak" ambient temp below -23 F (-5 C)

    Replacement intake manifold:. 17120-37091

    (Applicable to 2010, 2012 PHV, 2012 V, 2010 - 2012 Prius)

    T-SB-0027-16 March 31, 2016 supercedes T-SB-0075-13

"MIL "ON" DTC P0401 and/or Rattle After Cold Soak"

    Replacement EGR Valve Kit:. 04004-58137
    EGR Cooler Gasket 1:. 25685-37010
    Authorized Label:. 00451-00001-LBL

    Prius JTDKN3DU#C5491168
    Prius V JTDZN3EU#C3159675
    Prius PHV JTDKN3DP#C3023590

So could it be intake manifold design AND/OR EGR valve design causing trouble?.....

Wow that's very detailed. Wish I understood most of it.
Two things to note, based on what I could decipher from that very technical post:

    1) I'm not in the US
    2) Ambient temperature does not go below 22 C here.

After the EGR cooler, EGR pipe, the next thing would be to clean or replace the intake manifold gasket. Or at least that's what this video says:

They're each 10 pages long, but have a Copyright at the bottom of every single page. I don't dare post it because of this.

    22 C translates to 72 F. That's warm. Hmmm....

Did you get a check engine light?

No check engine related to this issue.
Just the dreaded P0A80. So yeah I need to sort that out too.

And no, 22 is pretty cold here.
The lowest I've seen is 19 in the mountains.
    Our days average 32-34

Oh and RORO means roll on roll off.
The car was imported from Japan.

That helps. Then I'm not sure my T-SBs apply because those are USA market specific....

You haven't done all the diagnostics. A weak ignition coil can do this as well. In fact you haven't done any diagnostics

I've done all I know to do, hence this thread.
I'm not a mechanic nor do I claim to know everything about this car. (y)

How do I diagnose a weak ignition coil?
