Used compressor.

I purchased a used compressor as this usually works out for me over remanned ones.

Now I am wondering if I bought into someone else's problem.

Added 4 ounces of hybrid oil to the high side port. Charged with one 12 ounce can of freon.

Immediately noticed that I can hear the compressor but it just cycles for 2 seconds and then cuts off for about 10 seconds rinse and repeat.

    Bad used compressor?

If I did something wrong, I don't think it would manifest itself with such immediacy.

Are all 04-09 Prius compressors the same? Just wanted to rule that out. My car is an 05 and this came from an 08.

    Thanks.

It takes 15.9 ounces. Could be low.

True, but normal behavior with my last compressor (when it worked) would be to run continuously and immediately after R134 was introduced.

I suspect your problem in this instance is that its a variable pressure system so you have to measure the amount of refrigerant and oil to a very precise weight so it's the exact amount the system is designed for. And from what I can tell the people who have had the best results on here are the ones who replace the compressor and then took it to Auto AC service where they have an expensive machine to ensure they get precisely the right amount of refrigerant and oil.

Thanks but I really don't think that is it. I think that it should work at least temporarily if oil added is slightly incorrect. Charging by weight should be sufficient from a system where a vacuum has already been pulled. I still think this is a bad compressor. I can't be sure, but I would bet that just to prove a point I could reinstall my old compressor and it would misbehave but still stay on.

    I could be wrong.

Turns out that the compressor was fine. The condenser was clogged up causing this and a variety of other symptoms. New condenser = cold air...whew! Glad this wasn't the evaporator or TXV.
