2006 Prius all lights turned on and then it stopped driving

    Hi guys, yesterday I was driving my 2006 Prius with 66,000 miles, and then all of the lights on the dashboard came on. About two mins later it stopped driving, so I pulled over and coasted into a neighborhood. I got it towed, but I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I did see that this happens when it runs out of gas, but my gage says it still is 3/4 full. I put two gallons in to see if that would help, but it still stayed the same. Let me know what you think

    It ended up being from an oil change that I got 4 days before and over 5 quarts were added.

    Yep, that happens! What did the oil change place say about paying for damages and how much is mechanic saying repairs will cost?

    A prius only holds 3.5 imperial quarts of oil, which is equal to 4 liters...

    Gen 2 Prius holds 3.25 Imp qts of oil which equals 3.9 (US) qts or 3.7 L.

    I'm not sure why you're quoting Imp qts, though.

    I was suspending my belief in previous proof that expert @Patrick Wong made on here that it was 3.9 quarts because someone mentioned that Toyota is metric and uses exactly 4 liters of oil in Gen2 Prius. Then I got on google and started converting 4 liters to the various forms of quarts and decided I like imperial quarts because in my experience 3.5 quarts of oil is perfect amount just barely below the full line in all the Prius I've changed oil on.

    Suspect that's because it's not feasible to drain every last drop of oil from the engine and it's probably 3.9 quarts if you're filling a brand new engine for the first time.

    And as always, I'm trying to stay open minded to this never ending debate...

    Of course If US weren't such asshats and we used the same standard of measurement as the rest of the world like President Carter required of us in the late 70's we wouldn't even be having this debate right now.

    it cost just under 900 for the dealership to replace spark plugs, clean the intake manifold, throttle body, and mass air flow sensor. that was a rough week haha. the oil change place was not willing to pay and would not take accountability

    A lot of assumptions and guessing going on there. Who even uses Imp qts these days? Even the British have dropped in favor of litres? Anyway ...

    For me, I prefer verified facts as it cuts down on the debating of opinions.

    So these are the facts straight from the repair manual (and also match what is in the owner's manual).


    Standard Oil Capacity
    Item Specified Condition
    1 Drain and refill with oil filter change 3.7 litres (3.9 US qts 3.3 Imp. qts)
    2 Drain and refill without oil filter change 3.4 litres (3.6 US qts 3.0 Imp. qts)
    3 Dry fill 4.1 litres (4.3 US qts 3.6 Imp. qts)


    Some pretty messed up reasoning here. 3.9 (US) qts is correct, but everything else extrapolated from that is just whacky. You wouldn't round up 3.7 L to 4 L, it would be more usual to round to the nearest 1/10 of a litre (or 100 mL) for an application like this.
    Agree with the sentiment, even if I wouldn't have phrased it that way.
