Hi everyone - I’m looking to purchase an EGR cooler (the part with all the honeycomb interior) from a local junkyard. What do you think a fair price would be? I checked on eBay and they are going for $200-$250.

I’m planning to always have a clean EGR cooler and then clean the valve assembly as needed.

This is for a 2012 Prius and I’m in the SoCal market.

Anybody? I called a junkyard and they quoted me $300 for the valve assembly and the cooler. I just want to know what everyone here thinks of that price.

I think you can get one for around $100. You really don't need a spare, it's easy to clean the one you have with a pressure washer. Remove it and clean it

That’s getting within hailing distance of NEW, from some discount online sources (maybe, prices do seem to be climbing, supply and demand, and time, pushing it up?). Still, I’d second cleaning; replacement is convenience, not necessity.

Do a search of junk yards online. It will take time, but you'll find one for less.
I paid $55 for mine, with shipping. They can be found.

What we did in the Bay Area starting out was have one spare that we shared and then "spaced out" the usage pattern ;).

Then the pressure washer came into the mix:).

Sold the spare for $100 and never needed it again(y).

I wish I had a pressure washer. I live in an apartment building so buying big items like that is tough.

I have one from Home Depot, it's just a hose attachment that you use to water plants and vegetables. It has a small round fitting and you stick that fitting into the cooler, instant pressure washer

Hmmmm I thought so from what I read on here and on r/prius. I read a recommendation to have two sets so you could swap them out quickly and then clean them at leisure.

A pressure washer at the friendly neighborhood car wash is probably a quick way to do the deed, provided the car you are pulling the EGR off of is not also your transportation to said car wash.

I bought one off of eBay for $130 shipped. But it was dirty as, well you know...

I wish I had a pressure washer, so far I've tried many different things to get it clean. Oven cleaner was first, but my wife had the foaming spray, so that didn't get very far into the cooler at all.

Then I did soaks in Simple Green Pro HD cleaner, which did better, but the passages were still full of hard carbon and thick oil. My last stage is running a steel wire through all the passages I can, and continuing the soaking in the cleaner. It's been three days now.

I'm definitely glad I got the spare cooler now. My wife would not be happy about her car being undriveable for days.
