Official (OEM) Toyota Prius 2016 (Gen 4) oil-change instructions

Hi

Any advice about the oil change for 70km prius 2017, would you prefer liqui moly or totachi? As here most of the prius owners recommend to use totachi, but no one clarify the reason other than that totachi is not reiterated, while lqui moly is reiterated oil.

Noting that winter here is not so cold and maximum 35 degree in summer.

I got confused, any advice please

Yes 0-20 is the recommended, but which brand, liqui moly or totachi, and what is the difference between them, why most of the prius owners recommend totachi??

I've never used either but used just about everything else, even Amsoil. The difference in synthetics in Mobile One, Valvoline, Quaker State, etc. is negligible for normal cars (IMHO)....the only major differences are seen in extreme use like in racing engines running at a bazillion RPMs.
The important thing with oil changes is to do it faithfully and often...procrastinators who go way too long between oil changes come to regret it, almost always.

 

I have a 2017 Prius Touring 4. I changed the oil the other day, and my slotted 64mm was way too large. The smaller generic multi sided wrench did fit however.

Does anyone know the size and where I can order the correct sized slotted wrench to fit my Prius.

I’m sceptical of the efficacy/need for a slotted wrench, and suspect if you measure inside face-to-face dimension of yours it would come in at 65 mm or more.

FWIW I use a Honda filter wrench, heavy stamped steel, and aforementioned measurement just over 64 mm. Works well, a snug fit. They’re available through Amazon and I’m sure through any Honda dealership parts department.

I've owned a Scion and Yota's and all take a 14mm drain plug wrench but there are two different sizes of canister oil filters.

If you want to turn a 30-minute oil change job into a few hours, accidentally pop out the metal spring and bracket from inside of the canister when replacing the paper filter! (Yes, it's replaceable but a bit tricky!)

 

Hello. I own a 2016 Prius on 100k miles. I bought it 2 months ago and I asked them when did they change the engine oil they said just before they sold the car and they used 0w30 oil while they should have used 0w20 according to manual. I have driven it for 2.300 miles since I bought and I’m thinking getting an oil change with a 0w20 oil. Which brand of oil and filter do you recommend? Do you recommend Mobil 1 and Fram oil filter? Should I go to Toyota dealer for oil change?

 

I have found aftermarket cartridge filters not the same as Toyota brand. Toyota has very small clearance from the media to center tube, others can have a large gap. The small clearance aligns the top and bottom holes and lends support to the media. On the Toyota TRD it has an inner steel center tube, the gap, then the fixed cartridge center tube on the cap. Two center tubes.

I actually threw away a new aftermarket filter costing more than the Toyota because of the gap and both end cap holes not lining up to the center tube.
Care care nut makes a big deal about not tampering with the cap center tube and removing it. Throw the cap away and buy only the Toyota replacement, it’s not worth saving money in the wrong place.

 

If you are unable to do the oil change yourself, and don’t have a reliable local mechanic, then yes, go to the dealership. DON’T use a fast lube place or another box store oil change place (such as Walmart). It’s a simple job that you could probably do, but as simple as it is those other places can REALLY screw things up and end up costing a whole lot more than the dealership.

 

Toyota dealers DO replace filters with OEM Toyota but they don't use Toyota oil....all the dealerships I've ever dealt with, in the USA, just use the cheapest bulk oil they can find. (Saves them money)
Personally, I'd use just about any other filter but Fram....don't like their cheap stuff at all. Mobile One and Wix are just about as good as OEM IMHO.

 

That's a little presumptive? My nearby dealership claims to be using Toyota Motor Oil, both bottled or bulk. They do offer Mobil oil as well. I was purchasing bulk (Toyota) oil from them for quite a few years, till the price went through the roof. Using Costco's Kirkland oil at present.

 

My experience matches yours, and I agree that it seems pretty strange. But then again, I apparently don’t live in the “Prius Chat Universe”!

 

While my car is getting closer to a new oil change, should I replace the oem filter which I installed 6.000 miles ago? How many miles does it last?

 

Absolutely! And I was pleasantly surprised to see the YZZN1's on the shelf at my local Walmart so I'll grab a few for the garage stash whenever I run over there. (3 of our cars take them, which is very convenient.)

 

Make sure that they are "Made in Thailand." Accept no substitutes!
