    Wow, gotta love love the generic description, “may be, for example”. The various materials and construction techniques reads a lot like the same material I’ve modeled for older NiH2 batteries, except, there were no porous materials in the old NiH2 pressure vessels. This is huge. The aluminum shell, I suspect, is being used for heat dissipation as well as elastic pressure reaction. You have to love how they’ve anticipated storing excess oxygen as well as the hydrogen. One of the advantages of NiH2/NiMH over Lithium is they can build in over-charging rather than relying on a BMS (battery management system). Another advantage is NiH2 temperature range. It’ll be interesting exactly what material they’ve chosen for their hydrogen electrode. The old NiH2 used platinum because it was also used as a catalyst.

    From another site ... someone posted some useful detail on why Toyota named it Nickel Hydrogen in the press release ...

    "It's definitely a NiMH battery. In Japanese, NiMH batteries are called ニッケル水素 (nikkeru-suiso) batteries, which literally translates to nickel-hydrogen, but the expression has always, in my experience, referred back to NiMH batteries. In all my reading of Japanese literature on Toyota's hybrids until now, NiMH batteries have been referred to in Japanese as ニッケル水素 batteries, so I would put the mistaken use of 'nickel-hydrogen battery' in Toyota's English-language Aqua news release down to Toyota's Japan-based newsroom translators not knowing how to translate properly (or their superiors insisting that they call it nickel hydrogen in English because 'that's how it's said in Japanese' - you'd be surprised how many times this happens in the translation industry in Japan, sigh)."

    So it looks like Toyota have always called it nickel-hydrogen in Japanese.

    Yes Toyota must have been working on this for 10 years, patent in 2015 and until this press release I have heard nothing. However twice the power and 40% increase is energy density is a major breakthrough for them and hybrid I think. They need a battery like this to properly hybridise the Tundra and Tecoma I would imagine.

    I think the Japanese person was confirming they have always called their batteries nickel-hydrogen and its not clear if this new battery is really just NiMH or whether its actually now more of a Nickel-hydrogen. We really need an industrial chemist to advise and I'm more on the electrical side.

    Alternately we wait for Toyota to release in vehicle outside Japan, as the wording used would confirm Toyota's true intention.

    Nah, I’ve loved the discussions so far. @Trollbait and @Richard2005 have made some interesting points. Anyways you’d probably have to deal with differences in Toyota’s titles. Maybe they did this on purpose. Hydrogen is hydrogen in the long run.
