I recently picked up an ‘07 with 170K miles. I just did an oil change with STP 5w30 oil (non-synthetic), cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body and replaced the spark plugs. I made sure to fill the oil to just below the full dot, run it for a few mins and then top it off as needed.
I just took it for a drive and after about 10 mins I could hear a ticking sound that sounded like loud valves.

Quick addition: I forgot to mention I added a small bottle of Lucas Oil fuel treatment. Could the noise be the injectors?

Could this be due to the weight/quality of the oil? Should I drain it and add synthetic 5w30?

usually the sound of a worn engine, one that didn't get oil changes regularly

Did it sound like this before the oil change?

What did the oil look like before the change?

Do you know the maintenance interval?

Based on the service history it looks like the oil was changed around 5-10K miles pretty consistently.
Before I changed it the oil was dirty/black.
I didn’t notice the tapping before. There was normal valve train noise but nothing loud like it is now. Just to confirm, it seems like it started quiet and then got noisy once it warmed up (driving for 15 mins or so).

I had an 06 that made lots of noise. The seller that sold it to me didn't consistently change the oil, the oil was very similar to yours, dark and dirty every time I would change it out.

What type of plugs did you use for the car? The standard issue Denso or NGK variety?

I don't think that plug is an issue, but that's the shorter lasting of the iridium plugs for the Prius, good for 60k miles or so

if this was your first oil change on this car, I would suspect the previous owner of using a really thick oil to mask the valve train and or connecting rod noise.

    I hope I'm wrong

They were as honest as they come. I don’t think that’s it.

Why would you use non synthetic oil?

why are you making sure not to fill it to the full line?

Go to Walmart buy a 5 quart jug of 5-30 full synthetic for $25, Use factory oil filter. Fill it to the full line. Keep it at the full line. Don’t use any additives in the oil. This car takes 4 quarts with new filter.

since your new to the car the engine has a very loud valve train it uses solid lifters. Only oil I know that will quiet it down is Redline.

is the guy that changed their oil the last time also honest ?

myself, I read lots of threads about oil changes going bad before I attempted my own, in the prius. I've been changing my own oil for decades without issue, but wanted to know caveats before I got involved in a hybrid. I'm very glad I did, because I wasn't familiar with the engine starting/stopping on it's own, and could have very easily left the ignition in the ready position, without realizing what could happen. if the last guy that changed the oil did this, and the gas engine started up with out any oil, it could be very bad. he could have attempted to cover up the very expensive mistake by filling it with very thick oil, to mask the valve train / connecting rod noise....
then you change the oil to the proper viscosity and BAM, bad noises appear.

it's just a thought, like I said I really do want to be wrong about it.... and the previous owner could be completely unaware of this sequence of events.

I drove it for about 25 miles yesterday and it seems fine. No excessive valve noise, good power, nothing unusual. The oil is clean and at the full level.

And like all used Prius G2s you have to stay alert and see if and how much oil it eats. Some eat a lot some don’t.

many sellers sell there Prius g2 for 2 reasons. Failing hybrid battery or eats oil or both. If you pay attention you find out real soon. So keep the oil at the full line so you can track it.

I'll keep a close eye on the oil. The hybrid battery was replaced with a refurb from Green Bean about three months ago.
