So did you get any insight into what the part actually is and does, or just drive a big punch through it and call it good? :)

I've seen a few sources on the internet call it a "thermostat". Given that the car already has one of those and we know where that is, and this isn't called one in the Toyota parts catalog, I am still kind of hoping that somebody with access to the European or Japanese manuals will crack the ever-lovin' book and just find out what the thing is and what it's for.

Also seems to be a tube running along the rear of the block, in the direction of the timing cover. Where does that tube go?

Thanks for clarifying his setup with those pics!

You will need to replace the thermostat housing with the US version which is plug and play. Next you will need to plug off this coolant inlet which leads to the European / Japanese thermostat as you will not have provisions for that with the US thermostat. IMG_8731.jpg

Pics are worth a thousand words;).

Potential reduction in posts or threads as well:).

Glad the OP got around to posting them for understanding (y).

Just to further clarify, the name of that part on the back of the engine is OUTLET, WATER. The Japanese and European version is 16331-37090 and has the unexplained gray electrical part. The North American version is 16331-37100 and does not have the gray electrical part.

The thermostat, whether the car is North American, European, or Japanese, is located in the WATER INLET SUB-ASSY, W/THERMOSTAT, connected to the lower radiator hose opposite the water pump; it's the same part number 16031-37010 in all of those markets.

Yes indeed the ‘outlet water’ as clarified by Chapman would need to be replaced with the US version.

This assembly also has another function that acts as a thermostat to open at a certain temperature to let coolant into the engine block for a quicker warm up time.

It’s a genius method that Toyota implemented for climates with colder weather for quicker warm up time!

Finally the issue that the OP is having is that the harness that is attached to the temperature sensor as pictured is not active which may be causing overheating issues with the water pump.

From our experience once we did the notifications as noted, we experienced no issues at all with the water pump!

Glad to share my experience on Prius Chat!

I messed up by adding water to try to flush out any blockages which I found none of but now there's water in my coolant how do I get it out of there and make sure it's just coolant in there besides just pouring some emptying some pouring some and so forth seems to be working now but it overheats just a little bit I suspect it's due to the water contamination

Please share your sources! It would be great to know about that.

It goes next to the water pump into the engine block

You need to plug up that inlet or find a way to modify the Gen 3 harness with the added provisions (plug harness) to make it work

One to Monitor the temp (white plug)
One to Open and Close the valve ( black plug)

Hell - I will send you that part for free if you pay for shipping. I have no use for it

That nipple looks like it's right next to the water pump discharge, so my guess would be the flow direction is from there, back toward the 16331 contraption.

Sure would be nice to see what New Car Features says about all that.

I'm thinking of putting a hose clamp to see what happens.

The ‘contraption’ is hooked up to the EGR cooler. As you may know it uses the exhaust gasses to heat up the coolant that flows inside the cooler fins. Therefore the flow is opposite as per your theory.
