we are getting rid of our 2010 45k prius. I am willing to sell to my daughter for carmax trade-in price. But if battery is near end of life she doesnt want that expense so I will then sell to carmax. I have done some searching here but cant find clear answer on lifespan. I know this can be fairly variable. Any help? I see info on the dr prius app - is that reliable? About $3k to get battery replaced?

check in with texas hybrids, he does some decent rebuilds. your car is a creampuff and worth the investment.
that being said, if she doesn't want to risk unexpected expenses like blown head gasket, brake actuator and etc. tell her to buy a simpler car like camry and etc.

The Dr Prius app is good. The battery is very likely still very good.

Make a good car for your daughter for next 50k mi at least. (My prediction).

Have you gotten a Carmax price? If so, what is it? I bet they would sell it for thousands more. From a practical point of view I'd say it is worth keeping but not if she is going to worry all of the time.

My 2010 with 103,000 miles still runs perfectly but yours and mine are at some risk just because of age.

The Dr Prius app would for sure tell you if the battery is running properly right now but the long term estimate is just that, an estimate.

I’d second Dr Prius, even just the static test, to get an idea where you stand with the battery. You might be pleasantly surprised.

With our 2010 with 92k kms, garage stored, twice-yearly oil changes and waxing, EGR and intake sorted, I’m not even thinking about trade-in. Will wait on the 2023’s, and if that’s a debacle similar to 4th gen, just carry on.

    Almost hoping 5th gen is a bust…

I look at this in a different light: if you’re not giving an immediate family member a deal, then sell it to CarMax. BTDT

I just sold a clean 2010 with 168k via private party for $6500. The low mileage examples are going for near new MSRP on dealer lots.

I would sell it private party and go purchase a beater Camry. Fix everything wrong with it, put new tires and brakes, do a full tune-up, and change all the fluids, and put the rest in the bank for when something breaks on the vehicle.

    You will make out ahead.

Dr Prius site reviews the OBD options. I’m using (Dr Prius recommended) Carista, works fine.

I just bought a 2011 Base Prius with 147K on the odometer. Not a speck of rust and my toyota mechanic said it runs like new. He couldnt believe it. 82% battery life left according to DR Prius app. These cars are too damn reliable to just get rid of. I would consider selling it to get something with a bit more tech in it, but I have zero concerns about reliability. My toyota mechanic just replaced the EGR for me under warranty (helps to know a toyota mechanic), changed all the coolants, cleaned the battery vent and cleaned the intake for $187. I love driving it almost as much as my tesla.

it does help to know someone, otherwise, it can be a very expensive car to maintain and repair

Sounds like you got a great deal!
What "EGR" did he replace? Valve? Cooler???
If he only replaced the egr valve, you'll need to clean the egr cooler.
Then remove and clean the intake manifold.
Then you're be set for a while! (y)

I think he replaced the valve according to the campaign. He did whatever was outlined in the toyota TSB for the EGR system. He also cleaned the Intake per my request. I will ask about the cooler, would that have been something they would have done as part of the campaign?
Can you guys think of any proactive maintenance I need to do to keep this car running? The thing looks and runs like new so I want to keep it that way!

Verify what has and hasn't been cleaned. Not sure but suspect it's nigh impossible to extract the EGR valve without also removing the EGR cooler. But maybe not impossible, so who knows. And removing the EGR cooler does not equal it got cleaned. And if the cooler has not been cleaned, at 147K miles, regardless of what's been done so far, you still have a constipated EGR system.

Other items, not on the US maintenance schedule, but worth considering: oil catch can, transaxle fluid change, and brake fluid change.

    More info/links in my signature.

Thanks! Just checked with him. He said yes they clean the egr cooler when they remove the valve. He said mine had very little buildup. I assume the brake fluid was changed when they replaced the brake booster under warranty. Transaxle would be a good one to do next.

At 45k the car isn't even broken in yet :)

Mine has 280k with the original battery.

I don't think he actiually cleaned it. You have to take it off to clean it.
And you can't see through it while it's on.
Besides, they won't "clean" it, they will only replace it. And that's not under warranty.
So they would charge you for a new one.
