Is it possible to put Gen 2 or later catalytic converters on a Gen 1 with no error codes and being able to pass an emissions test. My car does not have the HCAC by pass valve either. Previous own put a pipe in just after the 1st cat, it will not pass PA emissions for York County now. Any thoughts or help?
    Thanks,
    Scott

In California? The marking on the Gen1 Pri are different than the Gen2 so it would fail inspection. And the mechanic who “modified” your exaust would be exposed to a stiff fine.
If you could magically make the markings look like OEM then it would pass

I will rent someone my gen1 cat if your in the sac/sfbay area, you can come to sac and I can put it on your car and you can get it smogged in sacramento, then I will take it back off. I don't want to see even more gen1 in the picknpull, too many already.

Hey, nimblemotors. Any chance you are still willing to rent out your cat?

I don't check the forum every day, so if you or anyone else wants to rent my cat, please send me email directly at jack at nimble motor sports dot com. You will have to have the smog check done across the street from my shop so it never leaves my sight, it is the only OEM cat I have, and I have 3 gen1 prius right now. Have straight pipes on them all for actual driving them.

I noticed they now havel aftermarket ones legal for CA at $1,500.

    I
2002 Prius had cats stolen in San Diego last night.

Was given the car by a friend and I thought i'd hate it- no problem, I figured I'd just fix it up and sell it.
Turns out I barely had to fix anything and it was so cheap to drive that soon she became one of my favorite and most reliable wheels- even upgraded her with cruise control.
Put 10,000 miles on her in 6 months- total invested (including oil) was $750- and averaged 40+ mpg

    -I became a prius guy-

Hit 307,000 miles on the dot last night as I parked her on the street by my house.
I was really liking my cheap little bean shaped car.

This morning, I started her up and she sounded like a straight piped tractor.
Converters gone with the wind- aided in flight by a mini sawzall and a dirtbag.

If insurance wants to fix it, it'll cost me $1,000 deductible to do the (toyota dealer quoted) $2,500 repair-
But more than likely they will just total the otherwise entirely fine car.

    TLDR
Think it is worth dropping a grand for an old prius?

I've seen gen 2 aftermarket cats for 110 bucks on amazon- Can I use one of them?- As I understand it, they won't pass smog if inspected and there would be a check engine light because of the vacuum port?

Does anyone have a decent Gen 1 cat for sale?

No one can answer if it's worth it but you.
There are several threads on here about "cheating the system" with replacement cats.

How does the car drive on straight pipes?
Is it quite? like you have no mufflers on them?
Does it sound like when you get your cat jacked?

I did this a few weeks ago. Bought the car for $1200 with the cat stolen already. Grabbed up a gen 2 cat system off ebay. The cat and resonator go in smoothly. The adapter pipe after had to be modified to fit. Im a welder so i cut and spliced where needed. Its now stock quiet. The hcac code comes up even after plugging the line under the hood. However i dont have emissions testing where i live. But i was curious if it would pass a sniff test and it does. So at least its not polluting any different from stock, but it does have the check engine light periodically. So it would not pass legit smog inspection.
