Fuel tank takes only 5 gallons, prius 2005

    I have bought a prius 2005 with 150k mile. After buying this when I tried to fill up the tank it took only 5 gallons of gas. Later I pushed more and was able to put 2-3 more gallons in the tank. What might be the problem? I checked with OBD reader, there is no code visible right now (not sure if the seller has erased or not) but the car is running good so far ( I have driven 1000 miles in highway). One thing I can mention, in Car Scanner app, it was showing EVA not complete.

    The Gen 2 has a rubber bladder inside the metal fuel tank that was designed to reduce emissions (by collapsing as you use up the fuel, reducing the amount of fuel vapours that could form inside the fuel tank). Rubber is a natural material so it does degrade over time and may not be as stretchy as new, thus the fuel tank does "shrink" in size as the car ages.

    EVA might be something to do with the evaporative fuel canister?

    A really long road trip in hot weather where you're running multiple tanks of fuel through the car always stretches everything out and resolves it. The previous owner probably never filled the tank all the way and it's gonna take a bit of time to get back to normal. And because you live in a high temp place like Florida, you won't have to wait long...

    Thanks a lot! I am going to drive for a few more weeks and then try to fix that. Is changing the bladder is a wise plan to do own? I want to avoid mechanics and want to learn car maintenances by own.

    I'm not sure. I haven't read about anyone swapping out the bladder. I suppose eventually the rubber will degrade and you might end up having to replace the entire fuel tank (or somehow remove the bladder and reinstall the fuel tank without one).
