let me make it REALLY easy to understand.

in Cali, currently x number of people own a gas powered chain saw, weed eater, lawn mower, hedge trimmers , for lawn maintenance, construction, etc

as a reference point, one quick Google says there are 16.5 million lawnmowers in Cali.... that's only one commonly used lawn Care device.

when Cali says "gas engine banned, tomorrow only use lithium powered things" , where do you think all those gas powered things will go ? they're banned in Cali, so they're worthless, zero value, like old tires. if the Calli govt hasn't put a collection and processing plant in place, those banned gas engine devices will be.... tossed like tires , everywhere.

that's the first round of pollution.

the second round of pollution will be when all those people are forced to buy lithium powered devices.... each one coming in a cardboard box.... delivered by a diesel truck... manufactured in China.... all a great amount of pollution to get the "new!" , "Earth friendly!" devices into people's hands to trim grass, stir concrete, trim hedges, etc...

the third, and worst round of pollution will be when those MILLIONS of lithium batteries fail every year, and the devices they used to power are no longer supported... meaning now the device and the battery are tossed, inyo the land fill.

if you can't see this happening, you don't want to

 

Maybe they could encourage corded power tools. I appreciate they're not always practical, but just judging from the insane amounts of local flyiers devoted to battery powered tools, these things are not lasting worth beans.

And the corded tools are often a fraction of the cost.

Who said that California is telling people to quit using their gas powered things at some date? Nobody in this thread. You are inventing things to be outraged about.

The OP story is about halting the sale of new gas powered devices, not forcing retirement of existing units.

They don't need to buy anything new under this proposal. They can keep using the old ones, don't replace anything before they otherwise would be doing so anyway. There needn't be any increase in the waste stream compared to what would happen without this mandate.

And new devices aren't required to be lithium powered. My lawn mower, weed trimmer, chain saw, and hedge trimmer (the later two recently inherited from a neighbor moving away) are all electric corded, no battery needed.

California already prohibits putting batteries -- all kinds -- into the regular refuse stream. Batteries are already required to go into their own separate waste battery stream for recycling.

Your entire diatribe is based on false premises. You misread the OP, then jumped to false conclusions. Three points, three strikes. Next batter?

my ryobi one system is 17 years old. i've replaced a couple batteries, and a couple of tools, but i use them a lot.
i think they have given me very good service for the price point. i wouldn'thesitate to replace my gas zero turn mower with a ryobi in the future.
