Based on the link in post 20, perhaps the bubble has un-burst? Looks like they're now offering the actual individual replacement cats for the front and rear positions. You can now build your own pipe assembly. Flanges and elbows are a dime a dozen on Rock Auto..

Thanks for clearing that up. There are two and the front one is still a whopping $1981. Well, at least these two universal ones seem available. The direct fit is $2805 AND does not even seem available. (Maybe they realize they overshot the OEM price)?

Living in CA I can say the CA CARB EO# is everything. That's what gets you through the smog checks. What would be interesting is if one tried to sneak one of the universal but not Prius units through, would the smog tech catch it....

jzchen, I asked the smog check shop I go to about this very thing and they said they do a visual check on every car that comes in. The owner explained that he could lose his license and get shut down if he doesn't. He told me the OEM Toyota unit is the only one they will pass. This was about two months ago, so fairly recent.

Their computer has a database and/or they have a book. I'm betting they can pull up any CARB EO# and check that it is valid for the car at hand. Since the CARB # is from the same people that make the rules I would think they could get in trouble for failing you with a valid cat. All that is needed is a clearly visible #. These seem stamped on the cat....

I mean besides not seeing a visual done the last couple of times...

    AZ, this isn't complicated.
    1. take one minute and comprehend what you're looking at in the link in post #16, note it's for a Magna Flo 5671306. Yes, a "universal catalytic converter".
    2. take another minute and go to the link in post #20. Use the dropdown menus to select a Gen 2 Prius. (that's 2004-2009). Make note that a list of CARB approved cats appears. What is the very first one? Yes, believe it or not, the Magna Flo 5671306.

The Natives blessed my car today on Cinco De Mayo and for some reason after work and end of day errands my CEL with P0420 turned off.

I quickly went straight to the smog shop I go to and got a smog test, it passed!!!

This was a permanent P0420 which did not go on and off since I got my rebuilt engine.

$40 bucks will buy me 2 years till next time

I did use something in the gas tank a while ago but not sure it was that since it has been many fuel tanks since then.

@AzusaPrius I looked back at your Hybrid Pit Stop thread and it was started 9/18/21. Even though they rebuilt your engine this code persisted? They didn't help resolve it?

    @jzchen

On my last test drive before I towed to Hybrid Pit, the CEL was flashing, I believe that is when I damaged my cat.

I did not have the P0420 before the tow and when they ran diagnostic before they pulled the bad engine, the P0420 was not listed.

Strange but nothing they or I can do...
They showed me pictures of my cracked cat, so I still will end up putting a new california legal cat, probably Magnaflow.

Funny thing is exactly to the day last month I had bought a locking gas cap.

Now 30 days later the code is gone.
Got me scratching my head but Im stoked.

Does the magnaflow have a longer lifespan, or is the OEM just crazy expensive now?

I am willing to go with Magna-Flow, but I need to know which of the 5 options I need from them. How do I find out if my Prius is a front, rear, or underbody mount catalytic converter?
