So My battery pack is starting to fail, throwing codes P3000 and P0A08 (or something similiar) ever couple days. Reset by disconnection the 12 volt system for a second.Car drives fine still but MFD runs down to one bar, ICE runs hard and long (producing a fairly toxic exauhst smell till battery is (quickly) fully charged,

Reading after the car sits for 24 hours, it consistently how block 4 is lowest and the voltage difference gets as high as .4 or .5 sometimes. Voltage reaches 245-255 while braking with a full battery (is this way too muCH?) With voltage usually at a .2 difference and the bars staying green as the fluctuate, im thinking this battery is worth playig wackamole with, especilly considering I have a full OEM toyota battery pack thati asume is "dead" but has to have some usefull modules (how do i find them? dischge them with a 12 volt light bulb?)

I kinda plan to explor this hobby so should i get some D6 chargers and learn to dis/charge, any suggestions? I also cant seem to locate the bad modules easilty, any adivice there?

Finally , is techstream the only way to make those general codes useful? Something to read subcodes? And does Techstream require minivlc or can my bluetooth OB2 scanner suffice. It works on Dr Prius. Rhanks for Yalls help.

PS Id fork out a few hundred $$ and the remainder of my modules for a local to Northern Colorado (Ft Collins) who knows what theyre doing to "recondition/refirbish" my pack . I know it's risky but i got luck once before with this in LA

Also ... if i post dr prius videos, woud you kind men of talent help me interpret.? Car Scanner also has great (amount) sensor data, Including a bank 2 sensor 1 values of 0v. That normal? Lord baby Jesus, forgive my spelling, Winter beer > academic recall of decade past.

Fort Collins is relatively close to Boulder where @3prongpaul is:).

I'd look up Boulder Hybrids and have a conversation with Paul ;).

Good luck and keep us posted(y).

Awesome, Thanks for the tip! I'll certainly consult with this Paul, who is clearly a fan of grounding wires. Ironically, a safety measure I feel i should know more about before progressing with my trial and error style of education in electronifications.

How many miles on the vehicle, and is the HV battery still the original?

You could take a look for corrosion in the HV battery ecu connectors and again along the voltage sense harness. While in the general area, you could also inspect or clean up the HV battery fan and the nearby larger white connector as well. Neither is a very difficult job.
Wonder if this has something to do with that 02 sensor that you've reported only having 0v?

Best to check the scanner again, as there is no bank 2 for a prius.
Have you had a chance to read through any of the HV battery rebuild/reconditioning threads?
Techstream does require a mini-vci cable, or better, and a laptop. The current Apps don't offer subcode (INF) support that I know of.

Not sure which lower cost handhelds will read subcodes, the current Apps don't. Techstream does require a mini-vci cable, or better.

the car has about 190,000 miles, and its certainly not the OEM HV battery. It was pieced together from different modules by a guy on craigslist, years ago. I have cleaned out the fan, maybe irrelevant but i did find corrossion on two of the pins connecting to the fan (but i recently have confirmed the fan does work, just not very predictably it seems), am going to clean all the bus bars and corrossion right now, and have the battery uncovered for added cooling....i havent actually gotten the p3000 in a few days now but i drive her very carefully nowadays....I see, there is no bank 2? That adds up, since it says 0volts.

Ive read up on battery reconditioning/rebalancing for years now but have always stopped short of chsrging/discharging them myself. I think Im ready to take that step but feel that a prolog charger is a giant rip off for what it does. I can do the same job with a hobby charger , right?

Also, does anyone have any input on this extremely toxic exauhst (ill never learn to spell that word) smell that i get from the ICE occassionally when the battery falls to one bar and shoots back up to full way too fast? The car is far from airtight but I notice the smell as new and unusual.

    Can you characterize the smell?

Usually the worst is hydrogen sulfide, the "rotten egg smell." That typically indicates a failed catalytic converter- nothing to do with the battery.

On the other hand, the battery is in the cabin; it breathes the same air you do and it cannot, will not, ever give that smell- wrong chemistry.

If you are getting some other odor directly from the battery it may be in particularly bad shape already.

While all HV batterys (in my experience) have "that smell" (it's actually the black gas tubes ontop of the battery), This smell im talking about doesnt come from the battery, but the exauhst. It is in fact an exauhst smell but really intensified for a short moment while charging up from one bar.

In theory, but unless you have multiple 'quad' chargers it may take quite a bit of time to cycle all of the modules.

Have you thought about building a DIY grid charger / discharger, not as expensive and may offer similar results to the prolong setup.

Yes this is what i was asking for. How would i go about building a charger/discharger? connecting several hobby chargers or ....? Also, Ive got nothing but time so no worries there.

There are threads here that cover DIY grid chargers, many use LED power supplies as a charger, and light bulbs for discharging. Be sure to keep the battery cool by running the HV battery fan while cycling (same thing that the prolong setup does).

If down time isn't an issue, then picking up a single, dual, or quad channel hobby charger would an option as well.

Make sure you keep all batteries wrapped and compressed by the bars they will swell Don't do anything to them as raw modules they need to be racked and screwed together

SM-A715F? is this a charger I should look into. I totally agree about keeping modules compressed. In fact I couldn’t put the pack back together last time I took it apart that far. I’ve got both of my batteries sitting out in my spare room. I thought by leaving them for days I could find the bad module easier, I now know that I have to load test them.

So I will reconnect the bus bars in whatever fashion necessary before charging and discharging? And I can do this without taking the modules apart from the pack right?…I have some studying to do obviously. And some hobby chargers to buy lol….And learn to read. Sorry you already answered this question

No, it is just the stupid default signature that the mobile app uses. I think it indicates the model phone being used. Totally dumb, and it would be great if people would just delete it when they set up the app.

Since you have dr Prius app, on mine (iOS), if I leave it on special features page with override fan temp setting on, the fan runs max speed as long as you stay on that screen.

Guys are building out of computer power supplies I believe for like 35 dollars in parts n time . I haven't bothered 19 years on first battery till first battery code ever. I'll take that.. so that 1600 batt costs like 88 bux a year
