Has anyone had their insurance company pay for the purchase and install of a cat shield? Im with State Farm and was going to give them a call tomorrow.

That's like asking them if they'll pay for installing an aftermarket alarm system.

    Not gonna happen.

no mine hasn't been stolen. I realize they tend to target the earlier Prius models ( I have a 2013 Prius V) but am still looking at installing a shield for piece of mind. My car is in a garage at night and at the hospital during the day but we do travel and that would be the worse time to have to deal with having it stolen.

Here's the one on my 2012 Prius v. I paid for it myself.

I'm with State Farm as well. Bought our own cat shield out of pocket and installed it myself.

Additionally, I put some extra stainless steel wire mesh over it for additional protection against cutting and grinding tools.

Note: pictures are mirror images. They were taken in selfie mode so I could see the screen while taking the pictures due to tight quarters under the car.

Insurance companies do not pay for proactive services like trimming a low hanging tree branch before it crashes into your roof and causes thousands of dollars in damage, but will give a measly discount for having a home alarm. They may give you a discount on comprehensive insurance for cat shield but I’ve never heard of it.

Insurance companies keep business running . And customers fleeced. It's a racket. Don't try n drive way above means. People in costly payments with no 8ncomes to back anything up are auto hi risk . You getting dinged because of not. Being able to keep in check wants and needs and desires. You think these number crunchers are ignorant. Welp just hold it down and write ya checks. You will figure this stuff out.

Then buy a $3K car, drive it 100 miles and sell it for $8,000.

Agreed that they will probably not pay to install one. However, if the customer has had one installed, and a thief destroys it in the process of stealing, or trying to steal, a cat, will they pay for it then? This would be analogous I guess to covering the theft of an aftermarket stereo. I don't know the answer one way or the other. Anybody here know?

The insurance company would cover the theft of an aftermarket stereo. Your deductible would probably not be low enough.

They give you financial compensation for your loss. That’s it. If they paid you for an OEM Catalytic Converter you can put on an aftermarket one and then you would have money for a shield, If you had a shield and it was damaged they would pay for it. But they won’t pay to put one on your car. Here in Portland Oregon we are at about $100 million in catalytic converter stolen since January 2020. Everybody’s insurance in that ZIP Code is just going up….

We have some pretty severe problems. Ephrem was first busted in 2019 I think. At various points I have written at least two estimates for either a detective or the DAs office to use in prosecuting him.

The detective who was helping with the cat thing here after I called police over and over , quit after the DA didnt press charges on people he put his life in danger to bust. The citizens of portland espousing hate for cops didnt help either.

We are now down to under 400 portland officers (think its supposed to be about 900.) 4000 cars stolen this year, property crime running rampant, police will not respond to reports of gunfire “unless someone is wounded.” Decriminalized herion and meth, homeless that wont go to shelters because they like cheap herion and meth and have to be clean to get in shelter.

Even had cat thieves pepper spray people telling them to stop.

    Broad daylight we dont care!

Its spread to almost all cars. No law enforcement, they steal the cheaper ones too, not just prius. Oregon SB803 starts in january but doubt its gonna do squat.

Sad situation. Ephrem telling the cops “ill be right back out there” is pretty indicative of the sad truth here.

Not going to stop in portland unfortunately

My son drives into Portland for college classes.
He sent me a photo of his car. There were five syringes on the ground in front of it. Pretty crazy situation.
