Anyone replaced their hybrid battery yet?

I have 206k miles on my 2013 and I'm wondering when is it time to replace the hybrid battery? I'm doing 80-90mph on the highway so my mpg isn't great like 45mpg.

45 MPG at that speed is great. With my Prime while cruising across South Dakota, I'd get about 50 MPG under ideal conditions.

As for battery-pack replacement, just drive with it until a fault is detected.

What do you get for EV range now?

highway doesn't take advantage of the battery much, unless it is mountainous or similar.

very few reports of bad batteries here, and all within warranty iirc. some have upwards of 300,000 miles and 10 years so far.

EV off a full charge is reading 10.0 miles

I don't think anyone here's changed a PIP battery? The discussion's come up a few times, and it seemed like a replacement battery was extremely hard to track down, and very expensive?

10 miles ev is probably average, relative to your driving style, terrain, etc.

i'm at 12.5 currently, dropping as the weather cools, and i only average 21mph

Our 2013 PIP has 141,000 miles on it. It charges up to 8.7, and it's been that way for some time now. The northern CA central valley is pretty mild - it doesn't snow here. I assume there is nothing wrong with the car, and that its just aging a bit.

More specifically, with the Air Conditioning on or off? Not what Toyota refers to as AC, rather the North American "active cooling" concept of AC, freon-in-a-compressor style cooling.

only the fan switch changes the range estimate.

range estimate is based on so many things, it is a poor indicator of battery condition

Turning on the fan blower at the lowest setting with "A/C" button off reduces the range estimate by the same amount as with the AC on, which is why I didn't say "AC". I'm not American, but we call the system as a whole "automatic climate control".

Seems like all the time. It doesn't vary much. I once disconnected the battery and it reset to the standard 11.2. After a couple of months it returned to about 8.7. I usually have the fan on to a low setting. I assume most people do when they drive? You want some circulation.

no idea how many do, but you're seeing about a 10+% reduction. just turn the fan off for a moment.
and try to keep in mind that the range estimate is based on past performance. it is not an indicator of battery charge, or potential range.
it all depends on how you drive, the weather and geography this time, vs some algorithm used from past driving.

I have a 2014 PiP with 190k KM (~119k mi) that I have owned since 2016 (~40k KM). Battery still seems fine, though a full charge usually shows about 15.5-16km, where it used to show about 17-18km when it was newer. (All figures without climate control on).

I attribute it just to age, and really just pennies (well, I guess nickels, since we don’t use pennies anymore in Canada ;)), due to slight battery degradation.

This is also backed up with precise energy measuring from my ChargePoint L2; when the car was newer, a full charge was usually around 2.7-2.8Kwh of energy on a charge, where as now it is usually about 2.4-2.5Kwh. Which is roughly 10-11% difference, and aligns with the range reduction. Of course, the variance of charge depends on what level the HV portion of the battery was at when I parked…

In the end though, one km of fuel is about $0.056 around here ($1.40/L and about 4L/100km efficiency), minus the electricity cost for the same, it is about a $0.03 impact per trip. Not losing much sleep here, as long as the battery doesn’t outright fail. ;) (And I still haven’t heard of a PiP with a failed battery….)

    Cheers.

I think I've seen about the same reduction in range in the same space of time, my mileage is lower (about 84k miles) but the car is older (2012). And petrol is currently about €1.70 per litre (about 7.27 USD per US gallon) so I'm still making the most of it!

Ouch… just a reminder for us in North America that as much as people complain about fuel prices, other areas in the world are paying much more! o_O

Main difference of course is that North America is very much a car culture…. Big countries, lots of wide open spaces, and very poor public transit, outside of a few major city centers. As a result, people generally drive a lot here, and it adds up.:(

Good job keeping the PiP for the long haul though, despite this the criticisms for very poor range, handling, etc, it is still a solidly built vehicle! :)

i'm at 11.6 miles currently, with the drop in temps, compared to 14 in nice weather.

75,000 miles, over 50k on ev, so some pretty good use of the battery.

That’s great, and honestly it seems so foreign to me how people can log that many EV miles on a car like the PiP with such limited range. That is a LOT of short trips, lol.

By contrast, on my 2014 with 190k KM, I am at only 13% EV driving lifetime, even though I plug in religiously whenever I can….

Of course, the reason for this is the first 3.5 years I had the car, I was doing long commutes, logging on average about 150-200km per day, and about 37K KM per year overall. Since 2019 I have been working mostly from home and driving much less (I.e. much higher EV), but it has barely put a dent in improving the EV ratio.
