Some background, coolant has been disappearing like crazy but no signs of external leak. Engine shudders when motor is engaged on start up and generally during acceleration from 0-20mph ish. I would throw it in Neutral to cease the shuddering when in motion. Found some strange deposit on dipstick, but oil doesn’t look too milkshakey for how much coolant my car has been eating. Got coded for some misfires a while back and were replaced. Have had only one plume of white smoke come from the tail pipe and decided it was time to take things apart after being quoted 5-7grand from various shops.

I was able to get the head off and this is what I am looking at (please see attached photos). From left to right, bores progressively look worse, and there is a build up of white deposit on exhaust valves for the bore that looks the worst. Looks like oil dropped down but could be from removing the head bolts? It doesn’t seem like there is a breach in the gasket, but I could be wrong. What should I make of this situation?

How many miles on it? Has the EGR system and intake manifold ever been cleaned? Do clean those components after you've got it back together, there "may" be a connection.

Looks like head gasket's failing (fairly typically) at the wall between cylinders one and two:

Is the head in the same orientation, cyl one at the top of picture? If so, cylinder one's looking kinda "steam cleaned":

Close to 200,000, bought used at 130,000. Head is in reverse order of block shown. The white valves were over the 4th cylinder (right most)
