Why Prius V is involved in so many accidents and insurance rates are up?

Taxi use?

 

Hard to believe since they did not sell all that many. But as gen3s their entire lifespan from 2012-2017, their head gasket, oil consumption, brake booster and inverter failures may contribute.

 

Miles, usage, location

 

Two and a half years ago I was driving with my wife and son and made an ill fated left hand turn on PCH, when we were T-boned by none other than a rapidly moving v. I have a feeling the v was totalled as well as our beloved Alfa Romeo Giulia.

They tend to be driven fast?

Insurance tends to be priced by the individual record and usage pattern, not by the vehicle, other than for performance cars.

The v accident pattern has to be usage pattern based, which given anecdotal experience says city center ‘taxi’ or ‘rideshare’.

I like the taxi theory but I also wonder if the survey company fell into the Prius trim V versus Prius v model trap.

 

Those are claims, like glass, but not accidents. I wonder how or whether the algo differentiates between them.

Prius station wagons are probably very commonly used in the gig community.

They are probably driven more annual miles than normal cars, because relatively fewer people willingly drive them unless they are gas price sensitive.

Areas with confiscatory gas taxes "probably" (nearly ALWAYS) have higher property crime rates.
Areas with confiscatory gas taxes "probably" (nearly ALWAYS) have potholes that are visible from the ISS.
Areas with confiscatory gas taxes "probably" (nearly ALWAYS) have larger quantities of small debris on the roads that lead to more glass claims.

Prius bumpers, aren't....and a collision with anything larger than the North American tree squirrel will probably result in a damage claim with a comma in it.

At the end of the day, Insurance companies have ONE JOB, which is to meet their fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders.
They only TELL you that they're "there for you" during the dating phase of the relationship, and at the end of the day they always default to their ONE JOB, and let's face it....

.....they have a LEGALLY BINDING obligation to their shareholders if they are a publicly traded company, which is why, in order to keep up the charade, they tend to be regulated in most if not all of the 52 states by "Insurance Commissioners" or some equivalent, which are ELECTED by people who do not know who they are or what they do.
Insurance companies have them on speed dial though.......

Speaking of paying a lot of money to protect their interests......
They pay a lot of money for a lot of data so that they can accurately assess their loss risk, and they swap data freely - which is why they only need enough data from you to positively identify you, and what car you're insuring.
They do not ask a single question about your driving or claims history.

They don't HAVE to.
Works the same way with cars models too.
