    お…おお…新型プリウスが仰天顔で登場!! 次期型発表は2022年末「隠し玉」も用意 - 自動車情報誌「ベストカー」

    • Unique front design that’s recognizable as a hybrid (we all know what that is code for. Apparently there was much uproar in the BeatCar editorial department over the description of the front fascia of the next gen Prius which they have rendered on the webpage.)
    • Hybrid and PHEV versions. In Japan, the PHV will be renamed PHEV to follow global naming conventions
    • The Prius Prime will be focused on a premium experience (e.g. NX450h+ vs NX350h) rather than as a performance upgrade (e.g. RAV4 Prime vs. RAV4 Hybrid)
    • That said, it will be more performance oriented so it might inherit a modified version of the RAV4 Prime’s system
    • It’ll also continue to benchmark the VW Golf for handling and “fun to drive” aspects in the compact car segment.
    • Lastly, a hydrogen ICE version is being developed but might launch during the midlife update

As I started reading I was confused by the reference to the Gen 3 predecessor and the Rav4 PHV reference.
It might just be how the browser translated the page so I'll just paste what my browser translated

That's why the next Prius follows the strong design of the current early model (the style and concept are refined of the current model), the hybrid system will be an evolved version from the third generation, and the plug-in hybrid will continue. (This may be a "premium grade existence" like the Lexus NX rather than a "powerful direction" like the RAV4 PHV), the platform is likely to be the TNGA-C, which is an improved version of the current model. At the time of its appearance, it seems that it will be a relatively solid full model change.

I think "this is solid ...?", But considering Toyota's recent "attacking creed" and the evolution of the signboard model Prius, it can be said to be the default route.

On the other hand, the Prius is not only a pioneer of hybrid cars, but also has an astonishing hidden ball in the next Prius, just as it was a lineup of high-impact models in the past. It is equipped with a hydrogen engine.

Toyota has the idea that carbon neutral should be viewed not only in EV but also in the long-term overall CO2 emissions, as President Akio Toyoda stated in the official forum. , We are developing power trains in multiple directions. One of them is the hydrogen engine that is currently installed in the Corolla and is challenging the Super Taikyu race.

Similar to fuel cell vehicles, hydrogen engines have the advantage of zero CO2 emissions during driving and many common parts with existing internal combustion engine engines (factory equipment and developers currently making internal combustion engines). , Many parts can be diverted. Especially the problem of employment and factory is big). However, on the other hand, it is also true that there are issues such as supply methods such as infrastructure and hydrogen production methods. Toyota is currently developing to solve each of these problems, but if the first mass-produced car is the "Prius," its advertising effect will be outstanding.

Since it seems that it will take some time to develop the next Prius equipped with a hydrogen engine, it is likely that the next Prius will appear in 2025, when the next Prius will undergo a minor change.

    ■ What about PHVs? What are your rivals? ??
The Toyota brand has a plug-in hybrid for the Prius and RAV4, and the Lexus brand has a plug-in hybrid for the NX.

The Prius PHV has a selling point of long motor running with a large capacity battery, but the new model pursues overwhelming power performance like the RAV4 and NX. Therefore, there is a high possibility that the RAV4 PHV system will be installed.

It's a small thing, but the new third generation will be named "Prius PHEV" (instead of "PHV") following the global trend.

On the other hand, what will happen to your relationship with your rivals? VW Golf is the world's C-segment benchmark. The current Prius has an overwhelming victory in fuel efficiency, but looking at the international evaluation centered on the European market, it is behind in terms of driving performance and usability. In the new model, at the same time as pursuing fuel efficiency, the texture of the car and the height of the overall ability will be greatly improved, aiming to be a model that greatly exceeds golf.

Then there are new pictures located under the article above.

I just recently watched this video (i do not watch much of this guy/channel)
but he mentions toyo does not name the official generations of what they are typically know to us as.
Not sure if that is why

Still wondering if the style will be more Mirai-ish wth luxury vrs the efficiency/sloth-like that Prius is known as.
I think the preproduction/guess pics of the next gen look overwhelmingly like a mash up of
all four generation styles and then streamlined into a current today look with an extra smoothness and perhaps
a micro touch of their "prius" but very conservative to appeal to newer generation buyers and market.
At the same time, you see a bit of toyota in it(headlights etc), but if you were not aware, it looks totally like a new brand/design

edit: it took a few years for the 4th gen to grow on me, but the Prime version I like.
Could always be better i suppose. But even the 4th gen Prius is not bad looking in my eyes.
I do agree with others that Gen 3 is best design, but outdated about now.

bisco, majority of your posts have a negative vibe to it. Why not follow the forums of cars you're more enthusiastic about?

I, for one, am excited about the next-gen Prius. If it is really true that they are benchmarking the Golf, this will be a great car while consuming half the fuel. Give me a 60-mpg Prius with creature comforts and 180+ horses at a price point somewhere between the Corolla Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid. Also throw in e-AWD and LSD!

Many of us bought and supported the Toyota Prius from November 2000 to today or sometimes after we sold them. Good Prius Friend @bisco has a first generation, Prius PHEV. Be thankful for those who went before as this meant Toyota could continue their efficient car development.

I look forward to your Prius reports.

Except that wasn't an honest opinion. The post clearly suggests the new Prius will have more power. There were several things mentioned, of which ONE was a name change in Japan. You decided to be dismissive of the efforts as if that was the only thing Toyota was doing.

Thanks for linking to the original article. I read the entire article, but as usual from this source "bestcarweb", the content was thinner than water. It is all based on speculation and rumors. I did not find anything solid in terms of design or specs on the new generation of the Prius. That being said, the article is for Japanese car enthusiasts not particularly into hybrid or any other green technologies. I would not put much value into what was written in this article. That is my two cents.

The Gen 4 was benchmarked against the Volt and they said it ended up handling like a Golf. Now I haven't driven a Golf so I can't say if they're on the mark on not. I will say that the Gen 4 and Prime drive waaaay better than the Gen 2 or 3 Prius.

@ @Tideland Prius Thanks for posting this article. I'm just glad someone is actually talking about what possibilities there are for toyota to implement into the next gen Prius and/or Prime and/or whatever they become, if they're not just dropped from US market. Wouldn't that be a surprise?.

The aero is better for one thing.
Now we won't know until an actual product comes out, by properly designed LEDs will light up more the road than those older headlights.

And not blind drivers going in the other direction. Is there still a violation called "dazzling" in some states for not lowering high beams and malfunctioning auto headlight that don't lower the beam or flash at the approaching car, et al? Or was that just rumor mill BS I heard when auto headlights first hit the market 6 years? ago. Some of those new auto headlight features are really annoying at best. GM's high end trucks have some of the brightest high beams I've ever seen (or been blinded by), that's some scary sheet, unless those ones I've seen are some after market job.

In defense of Mendel 's choice, those old sealed beams were expensive in the ole days, but good god look at the prices of the current Prius LED headlights. And one used to be able to tell if high beams were on, a lot easier back than, than now. It's not just grossly misaligned headlight anymore kids!

Current headlight costs are a lot, but wait until you see what it costs to replace adaptive headlights from 2023 onward with 80 or more LED elements which possibly include a camera and computer in each unit.

    Slightly-bending-the-truth quote from article:

The Prius has been on sale in its current form since 2016 and, based on the six-year lifecycles of the previous iterations, is up for renewal in 2022.

Model year 2022 is at the dealerships, which is the 7th year, and still 4th gen. If 5th gen comes in model year 2023, that'll be eight years.

Camera is not in the headlights; it’s using the same one as the lane departure. I doubt the cpu is right in the headlight. It’s easier to keep it central and just wire it up.

There is a tiny computer inside the headlight assembly, at least on the parts list. I haven't actually seen it yet so can't verify positively yet. I noticed while checking out a headlight question in the forum and I'll get a link to the assembly so you can take a looksee for yourself.
This is the height sensor / actuator thingy for 2016-2021 corolla prius and prime
    https://www.oemgenuineparts.com/oem-parts/toyota-height-sensor-8940847020?c=bD0yMSZuPVNlYXJjaCBSZXN1bHRz

and below on that page under also purchased is the control module
    https://www.oemgenuineparts.com/oem-parts/toyota-control-module-8105647880?c=bT0xJmw9MSZuPVJlY29tbWVuZGVkIFByb2R1Y3Rz

and with a bit of imagination you should be able to see how it kinda attaches to the bottom of the housing assembly.

But that is only from me searching out the headlight assembly twice and the actual location of the computer is not written in stone, by any means. There's just to many little pieces to know for sure what each one is for, unless there's actual hands on experience.
