Wife customized her Prius instantly!

    Nobody hurt, PTL. But we're a one car family for a while. Collision center said they will get us some info by Tuesday. The hood would unlatch from inside, but moving the release lever under the hood didn't release the hood, so I can't see what the damage might be in there. Front right door won't open either. No fluids leaking, so that's a fairly good sign.

    It was a simple matter of looking both ways and then seeing the one you missed just a hair too late. From the dash cam, I'd say she might have been going about 10 mph at impact. The 2001 Camry she hit was most likely going a little over 25 mph. As you can probably see, she hit it dead center on the right front wheel.

    Whoops! Sorry to see her instant customization did not go so well. At least no personal injury. That's a good thing. The car is drivable? I wonder how the insurance company will handle this. I have seen too many minor accidents like this ending up totaled. I would think at least upward of $5-6K repair bill without any structural damage inside the engine room. Keep us updated.

    Thanks everyone.

    The passenger in the other car was the only one who seemed to have any physical effects. She had an ice bag on her right arm when I got there. Hopefully, just a bruise since she refused medical attention.

    It looks drivable. And there were no warning lights when we READYed it for being rolled onto the tow truck. But the Tupperware on the front was looking petty loose and dangly. Neither I nor the police wanted it to be shedding any big parts on the way to the shop.

    The other car was also drivable, but the right front wheel was kind of leaning in a little bit, so that's going to need some parts on top of the body work.

    Sorry to see that Jerry, but I am glad your wife is OK.

    Was the Camry going across her path, I guess it was as it looks like tyre damage in the middle. I thought the auto braking may have kicked in as I know it has saved me a couple of times.

    I'm glad they only needed icebags. Good luck with the body shop, hope they can turn it around in a reasonable period of time.

    Bummer! I just got my white Pearl back from the shop....I think the longest wait for parts was the windshield that had to come from Toyota.

    I just learned this week that the Prius has electric slats (or fins) for air control in the very front and that the computer can open and close them based on how hot the engine is. (Similar to how truckers put a board over their front radiator in the winter to help keep the engine warmer.)

    Yes, it was in a 25 mph zone. She was making a left turn. Absolutely no way for auto braking to see and respond.


    No. They were both going way too slow for that.

    Those are very likely damaged.

    I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune, but glad no one was seriously injured. The dash cam does not have a wide enough view to confirm it, but I would guess your wife's view of the road to her left was blocked by a larger vehicle parked near the corner. This is a real problem in our neighborhood of NYC. I was thinking no one pays any attention to the requirement to park more than 10 feet from the corner. Imagine my surprise when I just looked it up and found out the requirement is actually 30 feet from the corner.:eek:

    The latest gen Prius (at least on some levels) has sensors on the back corners, for when you're backing out of a parking spot. Maybe they could use similar at the front corners.

    The rear cross-traffic alert on our newer Prius works very well, and I'm telling my wife that she should add that option to the new Corolla hybrid she is looking at buying, even though it costs extra. Adding the same system to the front would give a perspective a few feet further out into the intersection, which would be very useful on a blind corner, but I suspect most people would turn that feature off to avoid the constant nagging that would be present at busy intersections. Maybe at some point a system can be built that would selectively turn the alert on, when another sensor detects a car parked within a few feet to the driver's immediate right or left.

    What's the brand and model of that dash cam? I would've been very interested to see the video of my Prius-versus-deer episode! (I had never seen a deer near that location and, still, haven't since!)

    If you look at the very start of the video, there's a red SUV parked near the corner. Large vehicles parked there do partially obscure oncoming traffic. That last parking spot is one or two car-lengths back from the corner and the curb comes out to keep anyone from parking closer to the corner, but it's still a factor such that she probably had to look that way at just the right moment. This area is full of those and worse kinds of blind spots. Still, it's legally an improper turn and a failure to yield.

    I don't think so. I didn't list the details, but the time allowed for each part and calibration looked about right to me. And $70/hour for mechanical labor is about half what Toyota probably would have charged me if I just took in a car for repairs on my own. I imagine they have some sort of rate agreement with insurance sort of like doctors do.

    I don't know Toyota's actual rate for the public, but I found this on AAA:
