Those making public policy have ensured it won't be long; Safe Stealing is all the rage, whatwith it only a misdemeanor to steal anything valued under $1000. Laws are racist, after all. The Vagrantvilles our betters have encouraged to crop up all over town make for pretty handy black markets through which no cop dares traverse. All considered, I'd say there's a +50% chance it gets stolen within the next 2 years. 95% of people in our town park their cars on the street, as it's pretty urban and every Deborah and Bill have converted their garage to an ADU for an extra $3k/month.

A new cat would be about 2 yrs worth of insurance premiums. I guess that's worth it for Big Insurance.

Fortunately, I'm not in California. There are tough cat theft laws here in South Carolina, My Toyota dealer said they have not replaced one OEM cat.

Most likely, those with stolen cats replace them with cheap aftermarket ones.

If the Insurance is paying for it, I'm getting OEM.

I don't care who's paying for it I'm not in California I'm not putting back the over $1,000 cat I wouldn't do it to my silica GTS or my sienna van I won't do it to my Prius I don't have a missions in North Carolina and some South Carolina probably doesn't either so we don't have these problems we just buy the cat off eBay from the big manufacturer that sells them for all the other cars except in California. Takes a few minutes to put in and you're off and running never to be dealing with that again

My insurance company claims appraisers just writes me a check, which is close the the cost of an OEM replacement. I'd just get a replacement off of eBay and never make a stolen cat claim on the car again. The check would likely pay for 10 cats. Basically, after the first one, I can self insure any future stolen ones.

It's totally legal. It would only be illegal to make another claim for a stolen OEM cat, if it had been replaced with an aftermarket one.

In California, it isn't like you have much choice: OEM, or a similarly priced Magnaflow.

The risk may be low, but I’m not willing to accept the risk of scrapping my Prius, since the market value is less than the cost to replace a stolen catalytic converter.
