And how would such a vaccine get approved?

Why not, if it makes you permanently immune because they got just the right conserved sequence that allows the virus to enter human cells? (Of course this is a possibility, not definite)...

I took immunology in college, so I sort of understand the immune system? Have you heard of Beyond Meat or Impossible Burger? They genetically modified a plant to produce heme.

I am a Biology BS graduate with three MDs in the household. Clueless, paranoid how?

Of course I'm not in charge of approving anything so don't worry....

You are implying that the mRNA vaccines have the code to make a DNA copy of itself, and insert it into the cell's own DNA. For that to happen, it would have to be purposely made, somehow make it through preclinical and clinical studies without that being noticed, and then get FDA approval to be injected into the general population. That is extremely unlikely. Up there with a microchip being in the needle.

The study that started this discussion even cited a preclinical study in which the vaccine was exposed to normal, non-cancerous human cells and no DNA production of the RNA code was detected. The concern of this RNA technology somehow causing DNA changes in patient is part of the reason it has been in development for decades.

The plant made the heme molecule on its own in tiny amounts. They stuck the gene for it in a fungus, yeast, or bacteria to make large quantities. We actually make a lot of things from yeast, fungus, and bacteria with modified genes. They are easy to work with and grow.

In and of itself, no, mRNA has no inherent ability to transcribe to DNA. I'm sorry if my wording implied that I imply that!?!?!

Who would have ever thought adenovirus would be injected as a vaccine.

(Back long long ago when I took immunology my professor said researchers tried using an adenovirus vector to infect lung cells of cystic fibrosis patients with healthy genes to short term effect)....

I must say as I have said before here. Not a fan of adenoviral vectors in vaccines. Among them, some much less.

Plain old inactivated viruses are vaccines here. If somebody showed up with mRNA I'd say gimme that.

This being a COVID thread, and the recently posted study, I was assuming your posts were referred to the vaccines now available.

Gene therapy is a different league than vaccines, with different levels of treatment risks to condition harms. We'll accept the risks of altering human cell DNA for CF patients, but not in something meant for the general population.

There may be better reviews available of mRNA for genetic disease therapies. But this one may slake curiosity and thirst for long words for now:

Messenger RNA therapy for rare genetic metabolic diseases | Gut

    ==
Perspective is that mRNA has been explored for such diseases for quite some time. By one way or another, they cause ribosomes to make essential proteins missing in people who are genetic lottery losers. mRNA vaccines so far have only come out for this corona virus (and darn quickly). That can be seen as a re-tasking of other ongoing research.

$4.50 here. no biggie as part of the overall budget

    12,000 miles per year average / 40 mpg = 300 gallons x 5 bucks = $1,500.

    x 3 bucks = $900.

    increased driving cost = $600./year

    compare to food/shelter/healthcare

but i digress, virus is in retreat!

Where will we go first? I don't remember, that was 23 months ago. Stay home 24/7? Who did that?

My state's Governor encouraged people to keep getting outdoor exercise from Day 1, and we did, with a vengeance. We stayed within bicycling range of home only about two weeks before hopping into the car to expand our biking and hiking choices. Visiting close family for essential work duties followed a month later, 'cause a sibling needed a shift change. Careful visiting with nearby friends followed after than, then broader family resumed once we were all vaxxed a year ago. Last spring Auntie recovered from her breaththrough 'rona case in time to have a small 100th birthday party. Very glad we attended, as it was her last.

After skiing reasonably near home all last winter, we are now on our second ski tour road trip of this winter. The first had to be aborted a month ago when we caught the 'rona while skiing in anti-vaxx anti-mask land. Apparently not all of them had actually had it early enough for full recovery. We took just under a month of recovery at home before our energy levels recovered enough to resume touring. Don't know exactly where we got it, but as another skier said yesterday, those wind protection bubbles on some ski lift chairs should be called "Covid Bubbles". So maybe this one was the culprit:
    upload_2022-3-9_20-46-14.png
when somebody else insisted on closing the bubble:
    upload_2022-3-9_20-47-15.png

In the end, our cases were no worse than a very bad cold, similar to what we had a few weeks before anyone ever heard of this virus. But I must admit that while our symptoms were worsening, it was very nerve-wracking to hear news of a local rabid anti-vaxxer, a FoxNews media darling for loudly resigning his State Patrol position to protest the Governor's vaxx mandate, had just earned his Herman Cain award. A person that much younger than us should have a better immune system than us, yes? Not at all comforting while the ache in one's upper lungs is worsening. And we'd already been to a small funeral for the child Covid victim of a long time friend, who very vividly described his kid's long losing battle against it.

Concerts? No thanks, we'll stick to skiing and hiking and biking for a while longer.
