I’m having hybrid battery issues with my silver 2002 Prius. I’m going to get it professionally diagnosed by a company called Greentec Auto that specializes in hybrid battery and hybrid powertrain component problems/replacement. After this, I want to be able to monitor the health of my battery and check any bad Hybrid codes on my own and on a consistent basis. I’m trying to find someone who has used a Bluetooth or wired scanner, NOT a wireless WiFi scanner, under $75, preferably under $50 that they have ACTUALLY used before on their 1st generation Prius and can confirm that it fully works with all the Dr Prius features.

I have a Panlong (generic pic attached). It is among those tested and favored by the guy who does the Dr. Prius app (he's got a web page about this somewhere). It works just fine w/ the Dr. Prius app.

Note, however, that the app is not 100% functional for Gen 1 - something about the bus speeds being too slow. IDK. I asked once. The guy is great with answering questions if you have them.

Gen 1 was before Toyota was really on board with the CAN standard, and it is quite a hodge-podge of different networking technologies, including some ECUs that can only be reached by relaying messages through other ECUs, and some that communicate over the same wires but using different protocols and bit rates, so a scan tool has to know which one it wants to talk to and reinitialize comms for that one, and anything the other one transmits looks like line noise. It's a mess. Techstream knows all the necessary tricks, and pretty much nothing else does, as far as I know.

Thanks, I have an iPhone and this scanner you posted only works with android. Is there a way I can send the app’s creator a message directly? Email or on here?

They make them for iPhone. I don't recall how I got in touch w/ the guy - I think I just went to the website.

Here's his page on testing the OBD2 adapters: Hybrid battery diagnostic and repair tool for Toyota and Lexus
