I think the filter element is more about ecology than anything else. Unless you can compact an oil filter and then dispose of it in a furnace (yes, you can burn trash for heat ecologically...lots of shops burn used oil in their furnaces), it's just toxins in the landfill. At least they make it "external" on the Prius. I had a Kawasaki motorcycle with an internal filter. Mounted on the BOTTOM of the engine. Even if you drained the motor first, oil went most everywhere as you tried to take off the filter cover plate. The filter media went up into a cavity in the bottom of the motor.

There is some effort to recycle oil filters. They're shredded, steamed and the oil extracted in a centrifuge.

Honda maintenance schedule has the oil filter changed at every second oil change. A simple move that cuts used oil filter quantity in half.

Revival of an old thread. With sky high inflation, 5 quarts of Toyota 0w-20 at $9.99 a quart, plus filter (forgot how much I paid for it since I bought it two years ago), that was $55 (minus the filter). Took it to Jiffy Lube for labor since I live in a complex where I cannot change my oil. Jiffy lube who use to charge $24.99 to change the oil, wash the windows, vacuum the floors, check the fluids, etc, just charged me $74.99 for the oil change labor only! Thankfully I only need one oil change a year, but $130 for an oil change (minus the filter cost) is a shock!

Better DIY for all simple maintenances and safer as well. Saw some people's engine blown up due to forgotten drain plug.
I use Pennzoil Ultra synthetic $21 or mobil 1 extended $30 but gives 15 rebate usually. And OEM filter is just 5 bucks so getting bulk from dealer

20min sounds way too quick for me. I usually let it drain until it’s dripping with very slow pace and with some cars it take a while. Must say that with gasoline cars its nice that oil keep clean thousands of kilometers. With diesels its black after engine has spun couple seconds:ROFLMAO:

You can get five quarts of Kirkland 0w-20 for $17 USD. Quality ACDelco Oil Filter for less than $3 bucks from RockAuto. Sounds like $20 USD to me.

I don't know how the prices are now, but a couple of years back I got 5qts of Mobil1 Ultra Synthetic (or whatever it's actually called) for about $22 at our regional supermarket chain AND got a $10 mail-in/online rebate off that.

Yup. Supertech 0w-20 here from Walmart, 4.4 qt is around $15.36 (12-quart box for $41.88) and a Toyota oil filter from a Toyota dealer on eBay is about $4.50/ea (10 pack dealer pack). ~ 19.86 plus tax. I do a drive-on ramp under one wheel and change it in around 10-15 minutes.
Everyone has caught on to this and inflation has caught up though because when i was first doing the 10 pack and supertech syn it was around $14-15 for the oil change with tax.

I use a Fumoto drain Valve. No drain bolt washer and no tools needed to do an oil change. But Toyota USED to give you a free washer if you bought the filter from them. Don't know if they still do, or if that is something that just some dealerships did.

Never did trust that free washer -- it just did not fit with my feelings about Toyota parts departments.Have to say though, mostly they treated me well -- except when they did not. And, it has been so long since I wrenched off a drain plug, I don't really recall, but seems when I was pulling off drain plugs, I seldom replaced that washer and have a number of them sitting out in the shed.

Yeah that's more likely. Up here it cost me $2.53 CDN last time (about a buck US...)

I was buying bulk Toyota oil from the dealership (brought my own bottle), and it WAS always an insanely good deal. Till last time: price for all the oil had jumped, and the bulk was MORE costly than bottled. They cut me a "break": charged me the same as bottled.

If you had gone back in, 20 minutes later, they had probably boosted the price of the bottled oil.

i remember when you first time mentioned. I thought this can’t be right, the dealership must be out of control. But my local dealership also offered bulk for me:) Must be some Toyota thing. But i like the approach(y)

If they're charging $40 for an oil change, you've got to wonder...
