Some of that noise was probably from the intake manifold too.

Did it also blow out a nasty black cloud under the hood? You may have stumbled onto a short-cut clean-out method. imagine plugging the tailpipe at the same time ...

    I like this idea :D

If it would blow a carbon cloud into the motor compartment, it would not be nice thou - some filter or dustbag would help then ;)

i find it interesting i see no mention of this, and at my shop we have seen numerous times. Car commands water pump on, shaft is spinning so prius pea brain thinks everything is AOK. We replace these as preventative maintenance all the time based on our experience

You mean the water pump failing? On this photo I see the impeller dis-attached itself from the shaft, so actually no engine cooling should happen in this case.
Would the ICE not overheat almost immediately?

OK - Prius has no water temperature gauge, but most of us are driving with some sort of additional gauges like HybridAssistant or ScanGauge.

If not, even if the "shaft is spinning so prius pea brain thinks everything is AOK", the "pea brain" has measures to discover the overheating of the engine.

Can it lead to a blown head gasket?
