    Hello,
I'm looking forward to change my own oil in my 2022 Prius Limited at about 1k miles. I know,... I know we get free oil changes with Toyota Care but I don't think they will change it that soon on a new car, I'm old school, therefore I'm not waiting until 5k for my first oil change.

Do you know what type of oil filter the 2022 takes? is it cartridge or spin-on?
I believe gen4 started with cartridge type, same as gen3 but I have a feeling it was changed later down the road for the latest models. Tried looking in Toyota OEM parts catalog, but 2022 is not offered yet but looking at 2021 catalog, I can see they are using cartridge according to the diagram.
I just want to be prepared, --anyboady know for sure?

    Appreciated!

ToyotaCare doesn't change your oil until 10k. Review your Maintenance manual.

They have been spin on filters since mid 2017. As @RRxing says, the first scheduled oil change is at 10k miles.

Toyota's filters are good quality and reasonably priced. You could just go to the parts counter. If you want to go to a parts store, they all have books hanging by the filter section that tell you which model of which air and oil filter goes with which car. The Prius and Prius Prime will all be the same air and oil filter from 2018 on.

I did the spin-on conversion on our 2010. The part number for the spin-on is:

    90915-YZZN1

FYI, you can log onto online Toyota parts sites, find this out quite easily. McGeorge Toyota Parts, Amayama, Toyota Parts Online, to name a few. Here's a link to the latter:

Toyota Parts and Accessories - Official Online Store

Or: show up at a Toyota Parts Department, tell them you need the oil filter for your car.

    Got it!
Thank you all for your feedback and I'm glad to confirm it's going to be a spin-on filter.

Also, I noticed on gen4 YT videos where the blue crush washer stays on the pan and people reuse them because it's hard to come off.
In my 2015 I change it on every oil change and it comes loose upon removing the drain bolt. Are we supposed to force the washer loose and exchange it or reusing is fine for gen4? What is Toyota doing when they perfom the oil change about that bue wahser.

    Thanks !!!

Yes - Always use a new washer. It's good practice and cheap piece of mind.

Impossible to determine what Toyota or any other mechanics do/don't do concerning the washer. I do my own oil changes so I know it's done right every time.

BTW, the torque spec for the drain plug is 27 ft-lb.

Sometimes they come off with the plug and sometimes not. If it sticks to the pan, a small screwdriver will pop it right off. I always install a new crush washer at home and at work. Once it's been crushed, it is harder to crush again. They don't spring back.

I just picked up the oil, filter and gasket at the dealership the other day for my 2022 Nightshade:
Filter 90915-YZZN1 ($5.41) (spin on type).
    Gasket 90430-12031 (1.13)
    Oil 0w-16 ($7.83/qt)
I’m like you doing my first oil change very early (by some) at around 1000 miles (old school idea of getting the break in oil out).
Also went with 0w-16 to meet the ILSAC GF-6B spec per the manual.
Hardest part was finding a floor jack that would get under the 5.1 inches of clearance and I picked up a 64mm filter wrench at the parts store.

Low rise ramps help, with the waaay back front/central jacking point; get the car up 3~4 inches. Without that lift, and with the propensity for floor jacks these days to start their stroke on an angle, it can be necessity..

^ I cobbled these out of 2x4’s on edge with through bolts, though something similar out of 2x8 or 2x10 on flat would be easier to build.

they’re ramped at both ends, which is not strictly necessary, increases the length, but has some advantages.

Yep! Spent some time yesterday reading some of your posts on how to get it up safely. Headed to the home center to pick up some 2x8’s or 10’s this afternoon to make a small one. Found a floor jack that’s less than 6 inches high to make it easier too!
You have been a wealth of information for me and I truly thank you, Mendel Leisk!

Here's what I made. Very quick and easy. My Prime, BTW, is even lower than a regular Prius at 4.8".

Yes, the jack issue, I believe it's actually lower than my gen3, I'll have to check on the jack floor clearance issue. I cannot do woodwork, not even a chance to make my own ramps as I have zero experience working with wood, but I do have some RaceRamps products that may help.

I was wondering, does Toyota add any break-in factory fill where I’m I doing more harm than good by removing the special fill too soon? I’m not waiting for 10K as per maintenance schedule by Toyota, should I wait for 3-5K for the first oil change? -thoughts...?

Also (Doug McC) do you remember if the oil filter you replaced (the one that came with the car) had the exact same p/n 90915-YZZN1?
I'm only asking because I don't want the service department to notice the oil has been changed by the owner when it's time for the scheduled Toyota free service, I would hate to give them a reason to void my warranty.

    cheers!

No inside info, but I really doubt it. My 2 cents: wait till 5k.

I’ll let you know in a day or so. Have to wait for the jack stands and pads from Amazon (one of the many “joys” of living in Sterling, Il. “We don’t have it but can order it for you”: duh, so can I!

The Owner’s Manual specifically states they can’t and won’t do that as long as you meet minimum requirements (thus my use of their filter and oil). I keep the receipts just to prove that (even though they say you don’t have to). Personally, I’d LOVE to have them try to deny a warranty claim on that basis: guaranteed new, top level Toyotas for my generation and a few more to follow! :).
Especially considering an oil change a lot earlier than required. Check out The Car Care Nut YouTube channel (until VERY recently a Toyota Tech, when he opened his own business). He actually recommends the 1000 mile oil change (with Toyota’s recommended oil).

Mendel Leisk thank you for your advice, and Doug McC, you are correct, I took the 1k oil change idea from The Car Care Nuts (small world) his new shop opens on Monday and it’s looking very good.

I took the time to read the warranty book and it states Toyota won’t deny coverage if the owner or third-party shop did the maintenance as long as the actual damage is not caused by it which I highly doubt it would be my case after maintaining and repairing my cars for years… from oil changes to timing belts, radiator, water pumps, etc. always used OEM parts.
What made me doubt the 1k first oil change is the amount of forums and threads where some people state about the special factory filling that’s necessary to properly break-in the motor, but like Mendel said, no inside info.
My previous new car was a 2017 Chevy Cruze, the first oil change done at about 2k ODO. I remember the tech advisor was shocked about my oil change request that soon.

Doug McC, I'm looking forward for your first oil experience on your 2022 Prius, please report back any challenge (ex. oil filter too tight or any relevant information worth sharing) for those who follow the lead.
This will be my very first-time doing maintenance on car that new, I do have unpleasant previous experiences after another shop but not right off the assembly line.
Personally, I hate letting other people work on my cars, especially these teenagers turning bolts while they mess around.

Here’s 4th gen oil change info from Repair Manual. They show both filter types, and ramble on about the older style.
