What do you think? I have a chance to sell my 2019 Prime Limited for a new 2022 Prime LE. Should I?

The big question is can you find a 2022? I don't mean there is one for sale on a dealer web site as those are probably spoken for already. That said, you'll get a great price for your 2019 so it'll make getting purchasing the 2022 easier. My dealer suggests selling the trade-in to an outfit like Carvana/Carmax as they generally pay more $$ than a dealer will.

i would guess no, but it depends on what floats your boat. for me, it would have to be close to an even swap financially

IMHO: it would have to be a MORE than an even swap for me. You know when a car salesman is lying to you, when they're talking to you..:eek::D If you try to factor in the $4500 federal rebate - I wouldn't. Toyota has exceeded their federal rebate allotment. While people here claim that you can still receive it; they're not the ones that are going to be out $4500 bucks on this years tax return. I'm a "glass-half-full" kinda guy. Expect the worse, but hope for the best.

Good Luck; but watch your 6 - if a salesman is watching your 6; they're actually watching something else...:(:notworthy::censored:

I'd wait until there is about the next gen. The 5th gen regular Prius is expected out next Spring as a 2024 model with the Prime likely around the end of 2023. News should be somewhat sooner.

The times and incentives are a-changin', but the past three Primes I've bought were practically freebies. If it works for you, grab it before the incentives are gone (your warranties clock gets reset to zero to boot).

Thanks. I have offers from both Carvana and Vroom (Carvana was $2,000 more, by the way). The dealer does have the car and wants me to come and look at it and talk about a trade.

Yeah. I had not even considered the rebates or incentives (in case the federal tax credit is still in effect.) I do like the fact about the warranties being brand new.

If you’re wanting to get out from underneath the 19, then why buy a 22 that is the same version of the same make, model, and maybe even the same color?
Are your tax and insurance costs going to stay the same?
My guess is that if the dealership is willing to not make a profit in selling the new car, or selling your old car then your real-world costs are still going to rise.
Generally speaking, only chumps trade cars in, giving stealerships a chance to make money on both sides of the deal.
If you have a paid-for 19, then you’re already well ahead of the game.
SELL that car if you want a new one and THEN approach the dealership with cash in hand.

Remember, you’re selling at the top of the market, but you’re also buying at the top of the market too.

I bet; if you go there cash in hand - You'll suddenly find that car has been recently sold.....
Then your going to be out, your great car and in a position needing a replacement, at the top of the market.

Let me clarify my previous post - for you dirty minded people out there. When I stated the "the salesman's looking at your 6"; I meant wallet - or did I???????:sneaky: Dealership sales make money on trade, finance, options, and extended warranties - that's the only reason they're talking to you. The service department keeps the lights on, since it has a nearly constant revenue stream. Get your car to flip it; then nail you on the rest - all the while, telling you the guy standing out there is willing to do this deal right now - if you don't..... "I'm doing your a big favor, and putting my job on the line to hold this car for you"!!!!!!!! There's only one thing true within that statement - someone is getting "JOBBED"; and it ain't the dealership.

This is just my "glass half-full" attitude; Your an adult and can make your own decisions. At least now your walking into this with your eyes wide open......

    Good Luck....

The difference seems to be small. What is your motivation? What makes this deal worthy of your time?

One great negotiating tool is silence. Don't talk yourself out of a good deal. Nod your head a lot, smile, and only say as. little. as. possible. If you want to buy that car, let the salesman and his manager go through their dance, then if you like the price of the new car, tell them you want to buy it. Don't agree to a trade unless it is in your interest. Don't say any more than you have to about a trade or how you will pay for it or anything else--you can change anything up to the moment you sign the contract. If you don't say much, they may think you're dumb. If you talk too much, you'll prove you're dumb.

Biomed said, "Dealership sales make money on trade, finance, options, and extended warranties...." Exactly. We handled trade-in. If they can get you to agree to a higher interest rate than you otherwise qualify for, they get a kickback. Options that the so-called finance manager sells you are all unnecessary and/or overpriced. If there is one you really want, you can get it cheaper elsewhere. If you want the extended repair contract (it is not legally a warranty) you can get that for less at other Mazda dealers; check on line. Gap insurance is another rip. Yes, it is important to cover the gap between the car's used value and the equity you have in it in case it's totaled in the first couple of years, but the finance sleaze-guy* is the most expensive place to buy it; check your car insurer.

*He's not salaried. He's paid only by the commission on the stuff he sells you. Often he is individual in the dealership who brings in the most profit for the owner.

Thanks. I don't have to sell the car or get out from under it. I have received offers from three groups -- Carvana, Vroom, and Car Max -- and may just sell it to one of them and make our purchase from there.

Thanks. I've been buying cars for a long time and understand how dealerships work. As I think I have said, I don't HAVE to sell the car. If I do, I will do so at my advantage to get what I want, whether from a dealer or without them.

Thanks. I understand all of that. I actually purchased an extended warranty from another Toyota dealer because the one I purchased this from was not treating me well.

We have thought about this. The LE actually has what we need, without the extra stuff we are not using.
