I altered the water pump i installed 2 year ago, would this alteration cause failure?

    So I have a 2013 prius 3, some minor front end damage, but it did slightly more the front frame rail to the point when i had to install the new engine water pump, i had to cut down the fins that stick out about 1.5 inches on the back of the pump. Is this a heat sink?, would the water pump get hot without these fins? We have run the car under 10k (covid) since installation, and quality AISIN pump has failed. any ideas? back of pump.png

    It might be a heat sink or even a housing reinforcement, but the effect is minimal, if it has been working fine. Main cooling is by its function of moving coolant through the engine and the radiator.

    I wouldn't worry about it. Failure is not likely attributed to the removed piece, unless there is physical damage like a crack in that area.
