“P” lock malfunction, code p0453

    Hey fellow Prius enthusiasts, I recently picked up an 08 with some issues. I get a “P” lock malfunction and a bunch of annoying beeps. All the lights are on. Parking button is blinking. The person already tried a new 12v battery, jumper wire from the 7.5 amp fuse to the blue, and a couple other random things. I included a photo of the code it’s throwing. I got it yesterday and haven’t had the time to throw it up on the lift yet, so before I do I figured I’d look for some insight. Has anyone experienced this before? I tried reading up, but information is slight on this topic. The radio sounds like it continuously reloads a CD or something. Mysterious.

    Does it currently run, and how many miles are on it?
    Do you mean all of the warning lights on the dash, if so then your obd2 scanner may not be up for the task.
    What are the couple of 'other random things', and were they similar to using a jumper wire?

    Remove the known jumper(s), then check the voltage at the 12v battery in the trunk area, and then again at the jump point under the hood.

    Do you have an owners manual?

    Hello, and thanks for your response!

    No - the car doesn’t run. Today I swapped in the 12v battery out of my running & driving Prius to no avail. I uninstalled the jumper wire, and tried to reinstall it, again to no avail. I put the car on the lift and played with the “pancake motor” aka shift actuator on the back of the transmission. I removed the plug and it seems to be making good contact, and still has dialectic grease in there. Tomorrow morning I plan to get back at it, I’m going to go through with a multi meter and see what type of voltage I’m getting at the shift actuator and 12v battery. Hopefully that will point me in the right direction. I’ve seen a lot of people with this “p” lock issue but not many fixes other than a jumper wire. I’m hoping to get it squared up soon!

    That Autel is a neat little scanner (I have a similar model), but it can only talk to the Engine Control Module using "generic OBD2" mode (which is very limited). This covers engine controls and emissions systems as mandated by federal law.

    Your scanner can't talk to any of the other 14 or 15 ecu's in a Generation2 Prius.

    If you want to DIY repair and old Prius, I suggest you get a more capable scantool. One option is to get Techstream (Toyota's pc based diagnostic software) + a Vehicle Communication Interface cable. Bootleg copies + VCI are on ebay and amazon. Cheap but sketchy. Legit version and a "good" VCI are pricier. Use the search function for more info.

    You can also look at a sticky thread at the top of the Gen2 Technical Discussion forum that reviews several OBD devices and apps.

    By itself, an emissions code like a P0453 (if that code is correct) is fairly "minor" and can be ignored until you have a better picture of how the other systems are on the car. Get it running, then take care of details.

    Post the voltages at the 12v battery in the trunk, and at the drivers side fuse/relay box jump point under the hood.

    Have you checked all of the fuses?
    Not sure if I've seen this 'fix' before, can you please post a link in this thread.

    I have 12.8V at both ends. I’ve been playing with this thing all day to no avail. The jumper wire trick was on YouTube running from the 7.5 amp p con fuse to a 12v supply in the harness I believe. I’m completely stumped…

    I remember that there is a power feed at a connector inside the underhood fusebox. This feed is for the park control system and it can corrode at the connector.

    Well folks, I had some time today and I got the Prius to fire! I pulled apart the hybrid battery because I got a code that lead me there. I then tested the battery, played with a few connections and decided I’d give it a shot again. I hear 3 beeps from what I assume was the relay near the HV battery and it fired! It only ran a few seconds (I assume that has something to do with the catalytic converter being removed and O2 wires snipped or the ac lines being removed from the AC/radiator(temporarily, just wanted to hear it fire) once in a while when I’d go to fire it, I’d only get one click and it wouldn’t start. I’d repeat the process and normally it would do it’s 3 clicks and fire up. Not sure what that’s all about, but I’m happy I got it to fire! I’m still only getting p0453, but I assume if I had a more capable scanner I’d find other issues.

    I would guess that the engine (ICE) doesn't actually "run" - yet. The hybrid system uses one of the big motors (MG1) to crank/spin the engine at 1000 RPM for up to 10 seconds when it tries to start the Internal Combustion Engine. It sounds like it runs for few seconds because it spins so fast. If the ICE did run it would stay running for a minute or three to warm up and charge the HV battery.

    You need to do some more check out before trying to start again - otherwise you will discharge the HV battery. First thing I would look at is fuel level and fuel pump operation. Then scan all ecu's.
