2005 Prius is acting weird. the red triangle of death comes on about every 4 days. 2 days later it disappears. runs fine with triangle showing except on long trips, I went about 70 miles away yesterday with triangle and "check engine" showing. at about 40 miles away all warning signs showed up and air conditioner stopped cooling. drove ok till I got there then felt a bit funny, no power. after cooling down for 30 min it started running perfectly. just check engine light on. At about 35 miles on way home cooling stopped and warning lights all came on. drove ok till a few miles from home when it lost most power would hardly move. Made it to in sight of my house when brakes failed. This morning it is running like new. by the way it has a new big battery. any info would be appreciated

Research inverter cooling water pump or ICWP. Yours has likely failed. Here's a quick link to some info. These pumps are relatively quick and easy to replace. I keep a couple on the shelf ready to go since I'm responsible for a handful of Gen 2s.

The turtle is red The car and the multifunction display is red when all this is happening. That is your inverter water pump you look at the stuff and you see where it is and when you have all the lights on you pull over leave the car running and get out and put your hand on the inverter water pump when you know where it is and it will not be running and the hoses to it will be hot as all get out You're not moving any water it's turning your air conditioner back that's the giveaway right there generally speaking.

My Gen 1 had a turtle, but it was yellow. Do later gens even have a turtle?

No I was told they call it that still anyway The little silly red car in the gen too was supposed to be green and it turns red usually when it does the inverters pump is out at least that's what I've noticed I don't even need a code anymore I see that turtle or that little car turn red from green I pull over leave the car on and get out and touch the inverter pump usually it's not running and the hoses are hot as soon as that water's flowing again that little car turns from red to green.

I wonder who the "they" are that call something the "turtle" in later gens, and whether anyone else with a Gen 2 has noticed the red-car icon changing color.

Haven't had any "bi-chromatic" warning indicators. When/if something comes up I just use a scantool and read the codes.

My Ouija board doesn't fit in the glove box, and the diagnostic dice aren't hybrid compatible. Flipping coins seems to work less than half the time. I guess that guess-work just isn't for me.

Weird coins. Good ones ought to work exactly half the time.

On the Gen 2. When the inverter pump is not working on the MFD in the upper left hand corner the little green car I think turns red with an exclamation point next to it I don't think it has a yellow just goes from green to red and like I said when that happens I pull over the inverter pump is not working in the hoses are hot. It also sets a code and if it goes like this too long it might blow the related fuse AM or whatever it's called. So I don't know if there's any magic or Ouija boards but that's just what happens in the Gen too both of them that I've had actually when that inverter pump goes out or the fuse blows.

Well, the coin toss results might be roughly 50%, but having a resulting diagnostic path lead to a successful repair is considerably lower.

Are you sure about that? That it is green? I have never heard of that or seen it myself.

Ah, got it. I think that's a design element of that information screen.

When you get one of the warning icons, like the little red ca!r icon, they get displayed over the top portion of whatever screen is displayed. So it could end up looking like they turned a little green car red.

Yes, similar to something like when a weather warning pops up on a TV, a banner appears at the top of the screen. The prius one just happens to have a red car icon that conveniently covers the green ufo.
