Aloha! was getting low-mid 40’s before, mid-high 40’s after. Most of my driving with this car is rideshare.

After fiddling with a few reconditioned battery blocks, got a new battery from New Prius Batteries. $1600, a Saturday morning install and zero issues since.

When you buy a new or reconditioned battery, it's only going to be the battery cells. They will be going into the existing frame from the car.

Once you (SAFELY!) disconnect all connections from the battery to the car, and remove 6 (I think) large bolts, the whole battery/ecu/fan comes out as one piece. Heavy! You will need a bench or some sawhorses available to work on it, as each battery module is fastened by a 2 small screws that come in from the bottom of the tray. So 56 screws! Tray will have to be flipped over to reach those screws.

These were super helpful to me before I got started:

This is not the case when buying a new OEM replacement pack from Toyota. The new cells are already mounted in the new assembly. Some parts do need to be removed from the old battery and reinstalled in the new pack. I did this with my '01 Prius, so not sure what all needs to be moved for newer generations, but for me it wasn't that difficult.

My advice is take pictures before disassembling anything, and when putting back together, make sure electrical connections are torqued properly. Wouldn't hurt to be close to an auto parts store in case bolts or clips are lost or stripped. Also don't drop off the old pack to get the core refund until the new pack is fully assembled. (The new Toyota battery assembly I purchased was from a part dept. over a hundred miles away and I missed taking off a nylon wire guide. Thankfully the core was still at the parts dept. so the friendly staff mailed the wire guide back to me.)

Yeah I was gonna say I got the impression OEM have cells mounted already. So I guess it's migrating all the other stuff. I'm used to working on electronics a bit and documenting. Glad to hear it wasn't that difficult. Thanks!

Update: disconnected 12V and cleared codes, did maybe an hour of driving today on local streets with stop signs, highway, then local street with totally bonkers traffic...no P0A80 reappearing (I know the permanent code is lurking, but no new one thrown).

I'll now morph back into one of those ppl who posts Dr. Prius snapshots. I only realized Dr. Prius had a "record" feature when I enabled it by accident and had my volume up! Would it be useful to see? I did a quick test record and opened it as a comma-delineated file. Very cool.
    • I noticed very little movement on blocks 8 and 9 voltage-wise and generally there was a pattern (forgot the scientific name) that looks like an "M" with blocks 8 and 9 being the lowest points.
    • Screenshots: I think voltage diff of .51 was the most I saw, and usually it was lower, probably averaging in the .3 and .4 volts. The #2 battery temp of 105 was the highest I saw, I think sitting at idle after maybe trying some force charging.
    • Generally the middle #2 temp sensor was consistently highest, with #s 1 and 3 similar and 5-8 degrees cooler.
    • It's about 74 and humid here and I didn't have the A/C on.
I know it's gonna throw another P0A80 eventually but I can already feel my cheapskate side drifting towards trying to get more life out of this battery. But hedging my bets: I upgraded to AAA Plus so I have 100 miles of free towing instead of three...
