I have the opportunity to buy a 9,000 mile original owner Gen.1 Prius in very good condition..there is one major problem....the original owners have passed away and left no title or registration papers. How do I get this car registered.?

In Canada I cannot tell you I have friends there that may be able to tell you more but you should already know this in America this is how this would work I've done this before in my state so if you know the car is not being looked for not stolen not anything no red flags in the United States in the given state I'm in I get a duplicate certificate of title application that all gets filled out right here on my desk I put the original owners names addresses everything I can find in the glove box on the registration whatever but I use my address you can also fill out the section where they're transferring that title to somebody else me and then I feel all that out I sign their names if there's a woman involved I have a woman who signs the woman's name and as long as there's nobody looking for this vehicle this will go through and either I will get a duplicate certificate a title and the other people's name if that's what I filled out or I will get a new title in my name if I filled out the right section of the back of the title you have to look carefully is this illegal I'm sure it is but the people are dead so nobody's going to be looking for the car on their behalf maybe their children get with them. But that's the basic gist of it I don't know about Canada that has worked here in the States and North Carolina and Western Massachusetts several times.

When you buy it, who will you be paying for it?

Getting the title over to you sounds like their business.

This question doesn't have a single thing to do with any specific make/model of car. You need a discussion board for Canadian legal issues.

But on the subject of the Prius...think of batteries in terms of time rather than miles. 9,000 miles or not, it needs a new HV battery (or will shortly). And certainly a new 12V if it isn't new already.

I'm assuming it's very similar to the USA with forms and stuff being very similar when I had to bring some stuff back from Canada it was actually quite hysterical getting to customs and all that with a motorcycle they all wanted to think we stole it or got it for nothing and wanted us to pay the maximum amount of tax on an old-timey scooter It was quite funny but other than that uneventful so I imagine getting a car registered pretty much the same whether people are alive or dead as long as the vehicle is not being sought after family friends reported stolen etc that's 9/10 of the problem.

At least out here, if the title is missing, it must first be re-issued. And if the legal owner is dead, that will be a bit more involved.

But hopefully not nearly as difficult as trying to sell an Alzheimer's-afflicted in-law's real estate where a legal co-owner is long dead, that co-owner's heir is also long dead, both their estates were long ago probated and closed and no-one then noticed their claims on this property, and the state still holds a medicaid claim against any possible remaining assets of the later. BTDT.

Yeah real estate would raise a lot more eyebrows than a minimal possession of something like a car unless it's worth a bunch of money and folks are looking for it and want it and want to possess it and don't want you to have it those are the issues if the item looking to be transferred or sold is then the exact opposite of that nobody wants it nobody gives a crap nothing nada then 9/10 of your going forward is done for you oh sure you may have to lie on a form but who's going to come back to jab you with that lie nobody because everybody's dead nobody cares and nobody wants to care thereby 9/10 of your problem is predominantly solved If you don't understand that that's perfect No problem The folks that need to do this they might

It isn't easy for follow the above non-sentence word salad, but ---

In my state, the one entity that really does care is the Department of Licensing. It is going to be a bit difficult to lie on a form when no-one can even find the necessary original form in the first place, so the DOL must be induced to issue a replacement. Here, this is a necessary step on the path to getting a valid current license plate.

Other states and provinces, especially those that don't care much about having up-to-date license plates, may be different.

Right and becoming that person for the sake of filling out the form and getting a new title to sign over to yourself there you go just another way to look at it.

That probably works better in states with a tradition of voters continuing to vote long after their death certificate was issued. Some other states are more diligent about making sure deceased people's transactions are signed by the authorized executor, not by the "deceased" themselves.

Twont be in NC . Don't know how that ever worked anyway . Maybe In TX. I'm ner Greensboro sit ins all that . We up on voter shiet round here. It's wen nothing raised stuff slides through. A duplicate title cert on a vehicle that has no 29 on said VIN don't raise anything . Just some simple head that lost his mess. Doh. This works with alot of government crap fortunately. They're are always clauses for their protection. Rarely envoked . I'll take that risk sometimes . It's cost me 25 bux before for not filling out correctly .

Do beware that hijinx that work in some places or regions, don't necessarily work everywhere else. Especially when crossing international borders to places that score has having less government corruption than in the U.S.

Yep absolutely I say do this by your region and I've been in several regions throughout the states had no problems long as the vehicle has no 29s on its VIN or old tag or whatever You're good to go it's when people are looking for something red flags go up and then other countries like Canada if you're not from there you're not doing any of it again if it's on the radar of somebody etc etc then all bets are off what I'm doing is with vehicles that nobody has interest in a few may be on this list the rest of the world forget it they're out trying to keep up with the Joneses and have a car payment I'm not trying to do any of that but I'm out right from people that are living or that are dead or died too quick and didn't have their paperwork in order easy fix they're dead they're not coming back for their cars but yeah do it by region go for what you know to me this is obvious.
