I was given a 2010 Prius it is burning oil/oil consumption. I believe it’s sticky piston rings but a mechanic claim it’s a head gasket. I see no coolant in oil dipstick or drain pan. The previous owner claimed it’s been burning about a year. It has about 170k miles. I’m going to try bg hybrid repair kit to see if it clear the carbon on the rings but I was wondering what steps should I do first. Intake manifold and erg pipe cleaning. Install a oil catch can and new pvc valve.

Should I do bg hybrid kit first then clean the intake manifold/erg pipe and install a oil catch can and pvc valve or the other way around?

    thanks for your time

Bg hybrid kit has good reviews on Amazon so I’m hoping that would do the trick.

We call these products "pour and pray" because their ability to make a difference is mostly based on making you feel like you did something even though you didn't. And yes it can make a slight difference but only on poorly cared for vehicles. For example if oil change didn't happen often enough an engine flush product before an oil change can help.

Some headgaskets going bad on a Prius can be ignored for years if you just make quick trips around town and avoid long trips or driving in high temperatures.

If you believe the oil burning is caused by sticky piston rings, how will the intake manifold, EGR, OCC, or the PCV valve help? Not to question you, but just try to understand.

The BG trio might help with the oil burning if it is your rings, it helped with mine for a little while. But after some time the burning came back and went through the roof; Toyota told me that it was the headgasket and that coolant loss would come next. That was also around 170k miles. At this point I think you could clean your rings and mitigate just some of that loss but I'd start saving for a new(er) car or a rebuilt engine. I'd recommend looking into HybridPit in Buena park, they made and installed my rebuilt engine and gave me clean EGR components for less than what a dealership headgasket job was going to cost.

If you trust your mechanic maybe just the headgasket change would be worth it if the cost isn't too high, with cleaning the EGR parts on your own. Since you're not losing coolant yet you shouldn't have to worry about the potential strings attached to that.

Why does BG use the term "hybrid" for this product? It's for cleaning rings/pistons, more succinctly an oil treatment.

Just get ready to round up a JDM engine in a few No big deal pretty quick to swap out then you'll have extra EGR parts to have cleaned and after ready for when they're needed and everything should be good that should carry you to 500,000 miles that is

They have the same part number as the regular products, just as a sub number. It's just marketing.

If I still lived in California, HybridPit would be my #1 choice for resolving Prius problems /

I believe it got sticky rings or carbon burn because of dirty pvc, egr, and intake. So I believe if I clean those out and put a occ it can prevent more carbon on the rings. Question should I clean first or after bg hybrid repair kit.

thanks for the reply. I think it isn’t a head gasket there’s no lost of coolant/bubbles in the coolant or any overheating history unless the egr got clogged up and overheated. I think it’s stuck/sticky rings due to Toyota history of faulty rings in this year model.

thanks for the reply I don’t think it’s head gasket because no coolant loss or bubbles. It’s just should I clean first or use bg hybird repair kit?

Before you pour that BG kit. Clean your engine with Liquimoly engine flush. Also, do a BG44k fuel treatment. I’ve seen reviews from both products that it reduced or eliminated consumption completely. Good luck!

The best test for you to continue to confirm that it's not head gasket is when you open the coolant resevoir you'll hear a sucking sound if head gasket is blown. As long as you can drive thousands of miles without that sound it's healthy.

In meantime, have you changed spark plugs and cleaned throttle body and mass air flow sensor? If not get that done!

I'm not a professional mechanic, but I believe that a headgasket can leak oil without also leaking coolant.

As to your question, you should do both as soon as you can. You can prioritize the BG first since it's easy, but it might not make a big difference and a clean EGR is essential. I think it'd be most effective to clean the EGR, then install the OCC while you're under the hood, and then right after that run the BG EPR and 44K to clean the engine and fuel injectors. If your car is like mine that may lessen the oil burning until the gasket starts leaking coolant. If it is the head gasket leaking oil, and I believe your mechanic, doing all of that will just buy you some time.

Also, how did you mechanic come to this conclusion? My local dealership put dye in the oil.

I've been using BG at our shop since it's inception like in the late '80s early '90s I didn't know there was a Prius or hybrid repair kit from BG that's pretty wild BG used to be a pretty widely used and distributed brand by upper in garages A lot of this stuff is snake oil of course but a lot of folks in the car fixing business aren't really into chemical analysis and what have you that much so and they're busy working on cars I don't have time to keep up with every liquid snake oil that comes down the pipeline it's awfully hard to keep up with and the manufacturing end knows this that's why they keep making more of this stuff just to have people spending money so what it's all about

How much oil is it burning? How many miles per quart?
How fast do they drive? If you're driving 70+mph you will burn a lot of oil.
I burn about 1qt every 5000 miles if I keep it 65mph and under, which I usually do.
It almost doubles when I start driving 70mph.
In 18 miles I will have 285,000 miles on my 2010.

None of those products really work. If those rings are clogged, only removing them and
hand cleaning them will free them up. Or removing the pistons and soaking then in a solvent
that will remove the carbon. You'll have to look at the cylinder walls and see if they are scored
in different spots because of sticking oil rings.

Removing tanking the pistons the slugs whatever you want to call them and then refitting the proper non-loose fitting rings I'm sure deves or somebody make some for this application Not all 2Z are only in Prii
