I was referring to big-ticket used parts prices that these owners face: HV batteries and gasoline engines.

As far as future used vehicle prices, I think ICE should fall but EV's either won't or possibly rise because of the new coming federal incentives on used (and new) vehicles. Previously, I've said ALL EV prices wouldn't fall till those (original) incentives sunset (Tesla, GM) because I believe the manufacturers set MSRP with those incentives firmly in mind and they did fall with new, lower MSRP's or at least began to........ till the pandemic changed everything.

When I know that potential buyers for my used prime or c-max energi now have a $4,000 dollar credit in their pocket, do you think my asking price is going to go up or down?

this is the longest i've held onto cars in a few decades. i'm getting a little nervous at 9 and 10 years old, but at least mileage is not too high.
i hope not to have to pay msrp for our next vehicles, after a lifetime of heavy discounting

Slightly related, Tesla financials look pretty good, 27% gross margin Q3 2022 (see Tesla posting.) My understanding is the traditional ICE manufacturers are not doing that well even with their EV business. It makes it hard for them to stay in business.

My high school stats says this is not right when the "average" car on the road, in the US, is ~12 years. (Canada is more like 10 years)

That's perfect possible. Cars could be taken out of commission prior to 12 years of age due to collisions or expensive out of warranty repair.

100k to 150k miles is the warranty life manufacturers design for. That and 10 to 15 years is what they mean by lifetime.

Average age numbers are generally for registered cars. Yes, many over that are daily drivers, but it will also include the classics and antiques.

If it was a "normal" distribution with a 12 year average for every car that is 7 years old there is one that is 17 years old.
For every 5 year old car there is a 19 year old one and for every brand new car there is one that is 24 years old, etc.
Admittedly, the distribution isn't normal because some cars EOL early due to accidents, but then some cars last more than 24 years.
Also, it is probably true that older cars get driven less than newer cars...so the cars you see driving are more the newer ones.

Depends on area too. Cars last much longer on the west coast than in Ontario for example.

Gas/Diesel parts are usually a lot simpler than hybrid/PHEV. I’m assuming a pure EV is also on the simpler side…
