Prius 2008 - Hybrid Battery Failure with code P0A80

    Friends,

    Last week my Prius 2008 model gave me early Christmas gift by putting up spectacular coloured lights and icons on the dashboard - including the red triangle that portends danger.

    Dealer inspected and told me the hybrid battery had to be replaced. The codes are P3000, P3012, P0A80.

    The car has 131K miles on it, and I could use some suggestions on if it makes sense to repair this by replacing the battery. If yes, will an after market / reconditioned battery work? Is it better to replace the car at this stage that replacing just the battery?

    The dealer also said there was a connector between the hybrid battery and converter that is corroded. Does any one here know what that is, and if it is critical to clean it up?

    Hello Friends,

    My Prius 2008 model with 131000 miles put up various warning lights, and the dealer gave me the codes P3000, P3012, P0A80 saying the Hybrid battery needs to be replaced.

    Can someone here give me some suggestions / perspectives? Grateful for all feedback and thoughts

    1. Given the 131K miles, does it make sense to replace the battery as opposed to replacing the car?
    2. Does it make sense to reconditioned / refurbished battery sold (and installed) by companies online? How long do these last, speaking statistically?
    3. The dealer also said a connector that goes between and inverter and something (Hybrid battery?) is corroded. Does any one here know what this means, and the ramifications of not cleaning this up?
    4. Any other thoughts / suggestions that will help me in my analysis is welcome.

    usually, i would say the best thing to do is put in a new battery, because an 08 with 130k is just broken in.
    but it sounds like you don't know anything about cars, and you may be better off with a new(er) one if you can afford it.
    rebuilt batteries are iffy at best. there are no statistics to help with the decision. you pay your money and take your chances.
    we would need more definitive info on what connector they are talking about.

    why don't you ask for a quote on the work, and compare it to buying something else?

    This just seems like a battery module has failed, nothing to do with corroded anything

    totally up to you. i am also dealing with this right now and just paid 1950 (plus core) for a brand new one. Mine has 101k miles. 131k miles is not a whole lot, especially if the rest of the car is in great shape!

    "New" aftermarket or "new" OEM, would be best..

    USA is a fairly large country, which part are you nearest?

    The first thing that popped into my mind when you mentioned a corroded connector was the somewhat common (but by no means universal) Gen 2 problem where there is corrosion in the connector and/or pins of the battery ECU.

    The connector is not too much of a problem as the new OEM battery will come with a new connector. Usually, the corrosion to the pins of the ECU are not repairable and will require the replacement of the battery ECU. This is much cheaper to buy from a wrecker/dismantler and install yourself when compared with the dealer installing a new part.

    I agree with most of the other advice you've received.

    Gen2 w miles here is worth fix unless a lemon gen3 not for me at present situations. Gen I own is more heavy duty . Gen3 primidona. Ladies light use .
