"The basic facts are she broke their laws"

A motivated interpretation of their laws. Ms, Griner by cause or pretense gave Russia a piece to play at chess. Pawns were swapped, or rooks, if readers think it so.

If I wanted to move illegal chemicals into Russia for profit, Ms.Griner would not be my mule of choice, for several reasons. If readers and world at large are distracted, it may imply that that thing is being done in other ways and y'all effing missed it. But, fine, let one chessboard hold your gaze. Surely there are no others :sneaky:

If the mention (earlier in this thread) that her possession was a more-or-less empty CBD tincture bottle, nothing more, it’s pretty dang nit-picky.

Up here that’s even sold in pet stores, totally benign.

8 USC of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, as amended, makes any person, immigrant or nonimmigrant excludable for entry into the United States.

Currently, anyone convicted of marijuana possession can never become a legal permanent resident (green card holder) or US Citizen by Naturalization. It is basically "the kiss of death for anyone who is not a US citizen,

Mendel, don't even mention marijuana or any residue of marijuana when coming across the US border from Canada or a flight from anywhere in the world.

The case of John Lennon created the only waiver of deportation for a small amount of marijuana possession.

We, the US, are in a transition between pot persecution and the marijuana pardon. She broke Russian pot law but I'm not going to throw stones given the degree Russia has doped their athletes. IMHO, pot calling kettle black.

I can and do celebrate her return to the USA. Heck, we even have medical marijuana in Alabama. So I'm glad she is or will soon be home.

Given how Putin is running Russia into the ground, I see the arms dealer as going to a worse space ... one that might send him to Ukraine.

Until the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990, homosexuals were excluded from entry into the United States.

The ideological provisions of the McCarran Walter Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 (8USC) wax finally were repealed in 1990—after denying entry over the years to such figures as Yves Montand, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Pierre Trudeau. The same 1990 reform also eliminated the bar against homosexuals and the references to “psychopathic personality or mental defect.” 63 The change in immigration law came late.64 The U.S. was the last industrialized country to cling to a complete ban on homosexuals’ entry.

The current administration was boxed in by the Rooskies according to our intellectually incurious media, but at least this time they didn't leave US blood on foreign soil.
I'm neither a particular fan of the NBA, nor am I a hemp head, but it would be nice to see the other side blinking for a change.

CBD oil isn't marijuana. It's derived from it, and so are hemp seeds. Those have been showing up in things like bird feed long before medical use laws were passed. They were irradiated to render sterile, but there isn't a risk of CBD oil being used to produce more THC.

CBD oil falls under Title 20 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Possession might make any individual excludable under 8USC.

    Cannabimimetic agents

Cannabidiol (CBD) isn't on that list. Specific substances containing it could also contain THC, but "Tetrahydrocannabinols does not include any material, compound, mixture, or preparation that falls within the definition of hemp set forth in 7 U.S.C. 1639o" according to the regulation. That means the CBD product can't contain 0.3% or more THC. At that point, it is legally marijuana.

"In 2018, the U.S. Congress passed and signed into law the Agriculture Improvement Act. This law removed hemp from the federal Controlled Substances Act, effectively legalizing CBD if it comes from hemp."

Curious media informed me that Whelan might be tradeable for Kalinsky, but Germany likes Kalinsky where he is.

All of this would make me laugh...if it wasn't for the absolutely f'n ridiculous way the ruskies prosecuted Brittney Griner. Case in point...alcohol is so absolutely prevalent in Ruskie culture that the entire world makes fun of them. This would be"funny"...but the fact of the matter is that alcohol abuse is actually a grave situation in Russia. And then they prosecute Brittney for having a vape cartridge that contained "cannabis oil". Give me a f'n break...this was obviously a political move by the ruskies...and seems seems to have racist ubndertones at that. Hopefully Russia as we know it will cease to exist sooner rather than later.

Alcohol abuse is quite serious in the U.S. too. Worse than illegal drugs, or worse than guns and motor vehicle carnage combined.
Sorry, but they are a sovereign nation, and you are not one of the citizens or subjects of that nation who deserve a voice in such matters. You don't get a break on this particular issue.

Very many countries worldwide have similar or even more harsh drug laws. Even the U.S. likely won't give you a break for such drugs discovered during Customs inspection at the border. Though U.S. Customs typically doesn't inspect that closely. At least, not any more.
True. But war and "special military operations" are also political moves, on a very different scale.
How so? Does Russia disproportionately detain minorities at the border? Or hold them disproportionately long? Not that I can see. Russia released BG quicker than any of the numerous non-minority political prisoners that I've been aware of.
I'd also very much like to see very significant behavioral change, or even regime change, but for reasons vastly more important than simply enforcing strict internal drug laws that are actually fairly common elsewhere. Compared to their external behavior, this internal drug case is a mouse nut.

Our media is reporting the substance in the vape cartridges as 'cannabis oil' (CBD?)
    Other sources say "hashish oil"
    So.
I'm not a hemp head, but I suspect that there's a diff between these two products, and one of them is legal to buy OTC if it contains less than .3% THC.
'Medical' marijuana is also widely available with a prescription, and in some US states you don't even need a doctor's note.
Some in OUR media seems to be down-playing the illegality of the substance in question, which is Ops-Normal.

    Me?
I would have just called the Rooskies buggering liars and avoided this particular rake.
As a biological male of a certain age with all original suspension components, I can fully understand that Brittany Griner's hemp use might not be entirely recreational, and my libertarian underpinnings mean that my give-a-crap switch is locked in the "don't" position where Brittany's vaping habits and products are concerned.

    HOWEVER (comma!)

    That doesn't matter.
The Rooskies are fresh out of rats to give about what we think of their laws, and my finely honed Spidey senses inform me that Ms Griner was busted with vape swag containing a detectable amount of THC, and if she had a prescription for the stuff I'm thinking also that she wasn't huffing CBD.
Griner, a star in Russia in her own right, was probably either unaware of the law, or she thought her street cred placed her above those quaint restraints, like they would here in the US.
    upload_2022-12-10_11-43-14.jpeg
Either way, I don't think the Rooskies were racially motivated in this case.
The largest Russia racial/ethnic groups are White (98.9%) followed by 'Two or More '(0.5%) and Black (0.3%).
This is perhaps because minorities are smart enough to AVOID living there.

It's going to catch up with them.
They probably have one of the lowest population replacement rates on the planet, and they're losing people almost as quickly as the US state of California.
The Rooskies (like all humans) are capable of racism, BUT in this case Ms. Griner gave them a low hanging slow pitch right over the bag and they knocked it out of the park.

.....in THIS case it was a little league park.

    Play stupid games.
    Win stupid prizes.
