#6257, nbc not on my accessible list. Anything really new there?

#6259, spare us Schiff! He polarizes the polarizable. I agree completely about preparing for our next 'game'. No surprise that I feel so.

Y'all can 'report' each other but it will solve nothing.

No spying please. I don’t want to be seeing another prisoner swap story….

An interesting quote from a NIH article comparing Spanish flu and COVID:

“Second, the two diseases kill via different mechanisms. While those with the influenza died of secondary bacterial pneumonia, those with COVID-19 died from an overactive immune response that resulted in multiple organ failure.2 8

no spying just puts us behind the eight ball regarding our enemies. might as well say no research, no preparing for a pandemic, no nukes, etc., etc.

I've never looked closely to see, but I wonder whether various actions by mods (such as posts held for moderation and later appearing, or posts appearing that are later removed) change the #nnnn numbering of posts below them. (Has anyone ever seen the #nnnn sequence with a gap?)

I most often use either [quote] or a post's permalink to refer back to a specific post. Those seem to still work, whatever happens to the #nnnn numbers.

I don't think so. I find the feature too disorienting, as it even removes ignored people's quotes from other posts replying to them, and then the reply makes no sense.

If you use the ignore feature, do you see gaps in the #nnnn numbers?

I've noticed gaps only when I had a participant on Ignore.

I've also seen posts re-numbered when moderators deleted earlier posts, sometimes en mass and causing large changes. This seemed more common back when FHoPol was not open-access, and conflict assigned to that playpen arose outside much more frequently. But we also had a lot more active users and moderators then too.

Quotes and permalinks always seemed more reliable, though I sometimes fall into using #nnnn too.

The ignored posts aren't seen, but the numbers of other posts reflect their existence.

I'd rather a "you're ignoring this poster" mark for the posts and quotes to avoid that confusion.

As is my practice, I silently check at 30 days, 90 days, and then randomly. The loose canons wandered off and the Nov 2020 election tranquilized the rest. The signal-to-noise level peace has returned.

    I guess it’s a necessary evil…

Without opening the thread I thought you meant COVID test.

    Happy New Years, almost ---
Flight from China to Milan arrives in Italy with %50 of passengers testing positive for COVID. Labs now searching for new variants.

Bloomberg article is behind a paywall but other outlets are carrying and linking.

it's not likely going to be pretty. we'll be doing the same testing when they get here.

more variants causing more problems, or is it inevitable anyway?

either way, we are so over covid, it makes no matter, even the covid isn't over with us.

even the government, docs and hospitals don't care anymore

I saw a report today that only 11% of covid patients are taking Paxlovid when tested positive. This surprises me. My wife and I both used Paxlovid to deal with Covid earlier this year and it was very effective.

    LOL! :p

agreed, it's hard to fathom. and paxlovid is the only effective post contraction med available for the variants, afaik
