Recently, my (2011) rear driver (left) brake pad burned through the ceramic on the pad in a few days. I replaced the wheel bearing (overdue), rotor, free'd up the guide pins on the caliper bracket. It did not seem to fix the issue. Caliper piston did fight me when compressing it more than usual. I plan on installing a new caliper, a new brake hose and I plan on flushing/bleeding the brakes.

I am concerned that if this does not fix this issue would this be the dreaded brake booster/pump issue? What symptoms can I look out for? At this time I do not have any dash lights but have not driven my Prius much in the past few weeks.

^see minute 2:40 on in this video. I am getting this noise when I open the door. I am also getting this noise when the car is off and I press the brake. I do not seem to hear it when the car is on, but I had a lot of noise pollution when I tried listening for it when the car was on.

^this is pretty much the exact noise I am getting when I was coming to a stop. In this persons comments, he said he had to replace his brake booster assembly.

What if they put a pump there and it never ran? :)

It is absolutely normal for the pump to run as needed to bring the system pressure up. When you open the driver's door, after the car has been sitting for a while, is absolutely one of those times. So is when you press the brake (usually not every time you press the brake, but every few to several times you press the brake).

If the pump runs, and makes the sound of the pump running, at the times when it's perfectly normal for the pump to run, that isn't any kind of a problem at all.

If the pump runs and runs and runs repeatedly when nobody is using the brake, that indicates a problem. But I don't think you have said it's doing that, here.

    Thanks for the reply!

My mind went to the worse case scenario (brake booster assembly) and I was trying to prepare myself in the event that turns out to be the problem.

    I'll update shortly.

    Issued solved:

It seemed grinding down the brake pads a touch and lubing them out really good was the issue. It could have potentially been brake hose, as I replaced that too but the other one looked to be in good shape. I did not end up installing a new caliper.

Confirm you’ve got the caliper piston orientation right, and do the wheel spin test, make sure no “excessive” drag. See link in my signature.

If on a phone turn to landscape to see signatures.
