The 6-year-old pair of my everyday glasses got scratched, and I needed a new one. I just received a new pair of prescription glasses from an online store. A progressive lens with slight astigmatism and prism. It took only two weeks from the order to delivery. The titanium frame with hi-index lenses weighs only 18.4g. This is the seventh pair of glasses I purchased online. Why so many, you may ask. I have glaucoma that requires fairly frequent prescription changes. I use to enjoy wearing contact lenses so that I did not have to be bothered with foggy glasses in winter, and a hard time wiping sweats on my face in summer. The extended-wear contact lenses were perfect for me then. But with age and glaucoma, I could not see well enough with a single-focus contact lens anymore. Tried several brands of multifocal contact lenses, but none worked good enough.

That's when I started buying glasses online. I can easily order several Rx glasses, one for driving, one for reading, one for computer, and one for every day. I have never had any problems with them. Not the brand name frame, nor the best quality lenses, but they were all good enough and affordable. The last pair of glasses I purchased in-store was at least three times the cost. Online opticians are serving my needs far better than local ones.

Have you ever tried online Rx glasses?

I haven't tried online glasses but plan to.

My hesitation was if I could get a good fit and proper alignment of my eyes to the progressive lenses.

I too have progressive lenses with astigmatism and my glasses come close to $300. $40 for the frames and almost $250 for the lenses at Walmart.

Have you ever had to return a pair or use their customer service - I ask as I am curious if they work with a customer to get the right fit?

Zenni and Eyebuydirect are who I was looking at.

Am quite interested in your experience.

I have used both for my Rx glasses. The most recent one was from Eyebuydirect, but I bought the last pair from Zenni. I have not had to use their customer service for my orders so far. All of my orders came as expected.

I never had to return mine. But, I believe Zenni has no question-asked 30 days return policy. You can get 100% store credit or a 50% money refund. Eyebuydirect's return policy is 14 days free return for equal value exchange or full refund.

My last pair of in-store glasses was from LensCrafters, it was fitted on the brand frame. So, the frame alone cost over $200, but with progressive Rx and hi-index, the total cost was well over $600. My most recent order with a similar Rx was ~$200 total from Eyebuydirect. I have ordered several Rx glasses from Zenni for less than $100 each. You just can't beat their values.

I have read Warby Parker and GlassesUSA are also good, but they are a bit more expensive.

I need to jump on the wagon and order some online. My last venture at an optometrist cost me over $500. But now I have a copy of my most recent eye exam. I will use the prescription when I order them online. If I can get lenses and frames at or around $250, I would be very happy.

after four vitrectomies and two cataract surgeries, my vision is now the opposite of what it used to be.
i was near sighted all my life, and had progressive lenses for many years.
now, i'm far sighted, and can't see a thing from zero to 3 feet.
i bought a pair of generic progressive reading glasses on amazon for $15., they weren't bad for the price, but the frames didn't quite fit and the lenses were blue blockers, which made everything look yellow.
regular reading glasses worked fine, but were only good at a certain distance. couldn't read the dashboard with or without them.
so i bit the bullet and dropped $700. on the best lenses i could get. $200. frames, $700. lenses, minus $200 insurance, $700. out of pocket.
i would be interested in trying an online shop next time, or maybe as a backup pair.

What is interesting is how a persons eyesight can change over the years. Most recently, my right eye decided to "take a break". It was funny because I would try to compensate with my left eye, making funny facial expressions in the process. My left eye has always been sharp as a tack, but losing just a little sharpness on my right eye made reading and focusing so different. On my last exam, I got the full exam including a retina scan and all is good. So, it's just a part of the aging process that I will accept.

It is interesting how vision changes. I have always worn glasses since starting elementary school and my vision remained stable until I reached my 40's. My vision to read things close to me changed very quickly to require a need for bifocals. I noticed it immediately as my job required me to read electrical schematics and I was having to take off my glasses - use magnification etc. - visited the eye doctor and he wrote a prescription for the progressive bifocals which took care of the issue.

In my case, my eyesight changes almost on daily bases. Rx that was perfect yesterday will not work today. Although our eyes can adjust after a while, it is always difficult for me to find the best glasses for the day. I currently use three different daily glasses in addition to the single focal glasses specific for my computer work, reading, and driving. I even tried one of the as-seen-on-TV adjustable glasses, but that was not a solution. Myopic Rx could not get adjusted strong enough for me and it has no progressive range.

As I grew up with poor nearsighted vision (myopia) I imagined when I get old and start getting farsightedness due to presbyopia, I thought I would get a period of time I can actually see things without corrective lenses. Boy, was I wrong! When I started having problems with seeing things near with my single-focus contact lenses some years ago, I realized that without corrective lenses, I can't see far or near. Tried several brands of bifocal and multifocal contact lenses but none worked. I ended up using contact lenses for far and a reading glass for near. But in the end, settled on Rx progressive lens. Online glasses were the best thing I could use for my changing Rx.

my brother in law is 70 and has had glaucoma for awhile. manages it with special eyedrops and has to see the doc pretty often. i'll have to ask him about glasses and their effectiveness, he's never mentioned anything, and he's had glasses for the almost 50 years i've known him.

Yeah, same for me. Eye drop twice a day. That was another reason I had to switch to Rx glasses from contact lenses. Can't do eye drops with contact lenses in. I go see my ophthalmologist (M.D. not an optometrist D.O.) 3 times a year. The thing about my eye acuity is that the unstable Rx is not always apparent on refractive exams, at least for me. It fluctuates frequently enough such that one set of Rx glasses works better than another on one day but changes often enough. So having multiple different Rx glasses to cover the range helps. If I had to order those glasses at instore optitian, it would have cost a fortune.

Kinda of skimmed through this thread. I have been using GlassesUSA for 15 years or more.

A neighbor worked in some sort of capacity with supplying frames to opticians/opthalmologists/eye doctors. He told me one company made most of the frames sold in the US and that most of the frames cost a few bucks to make -- and "designer" frames cost a few bucks more -- not that they were made any better.

I have been extremely happy with GlassesUSA. I have only ordered progressive lenses and all have been great. I mostly order generic frames with progressive lenses for extremely low prices, although I have ordered Rayban frames for a few pairs that I know will get knocked around a bit for outdoor activities. Of course, the Rayban have much more expensive, but still well below what I would pay locally.

GlassesUSA has a variety of codes around and none easy to find, that will lower your $$ considerably. YMMV, but I have been quite happy and have saved $$$$.
