According to the Reuters news agency:

GM reclaims U.S. auto sales crown from Toyota | Reuters

Definitely been a while since GM was Top Dog in the U.S.A. Will it last? who knows.

I appreciate the article but suspect the problem is loss of repeat and even new customers:

Tesla Reveals What Cars Tesla Buyers Trade In

GM doesn't even rate a piece of the trade-in pie. Of course GM sold enough Volts (discontinued), Bolts (recalled), and Hummer EVs to avoid losing as many customers to Tesla. Upon reflection, the Bolt and Hummer EV bracket the Tesla price/performance range. The Bolt is often a fraction of the cost of Tesla. As for the Hummer EV, well it is higher than all but a few Tesla models:

    Headline: GM re-claims sales crown

Article: Toyota ran out of cars to sell

....so that's a heartfelt congratulations to GM then right?

I don’t predict it will continue without all the government support. Even with the government choosing them as a winner they can’t avoid replacing all the cars they sell for free because they catch on fire randomly…its pathetic.

I would have got one if they had a better track record for reliability. My best friend in college had a small chevy SUV. One night we decided to go out. We walked across campus to where he parked and got in the car. He inserts the key and guess what happened? His car wouldn’t start!

    See 2008-2009.

The government could have allowed GM to fail altogether. All the various assets and business units could've been bought up by other automakers, but that would have been too capitalistic and market-driven, so we socialized the billions in losses of the former company and allowed them to create a new one.

People have had then simply stallout while being driven. There is also the clogged EGR and headgasket issues. Seems Prius reliability has been declining since the gen2.

In fairness, we had just bailed out all those banks, without caveats to keep lending to other businesses, which lead to to old GM's fall.

On the other hand, when Volkswagen was found out to be Laden with diesel gate issues they lost the number 1 seller crown worldwide. Different scenarios yield different results.
