Hello everyone! I have a 2006 Prius that has been with me for about 8 years. About 5 years ago I purchased a Prolong Battery conditioning thing which I've been doing once every 6 months. I have noticed that the main battery had started to fail because we would only get about 30 miles per gallon in the city and during the freeway it would be around 40 to 45. Recently I was driving in the car started to stutter and then it turned on the red triangle.
Remember running some codes and seeing that it was related to the battery. I thought that was the end of it since now I knew what was wrong however there has been some new codes which have appeared recently and I have cleared them once and continue to happen.

I've attached the picture of the codes that continue to appear if anyone happens to know why or what they mean that would be very helpful! Also wanted to ask if people think that it's worth repairing the prius, I have changed the odometer under the dashboard at 100k miles. The car has currently 190k miles on it.

    Thank you!

47.1 was rated mileage for that cat 45 not to shabby at 05 w original HV .few years past due. The ABS VSC trac light kind of interest me more as well as the supplemental restraint light or code could be the clock spring or tape thing stuck on the steering wheel do all the buttons on the steering wheel work? Volume up and down all that stuff. Is there a light on for the airbag that does not go off do you hear the whirring of the ABS pump 30 seconds to a minute after you shut off the car Go back and open the door after that stops and it starts again things like this. I personally would definitely probably be getting my HD battery but check the little bit more what about the 12 volt that needs to be good.

"Worth" is a word that means different things to everyone. One person might only have 1 car and depend on it for generating income. Someone else might might have 2-3 cars and is "looking for a reason" to trade one in on a new car.

That said, I am not sure you have all the information needed to make a decision. You have 2 ABS codes, and 2 airbag codes. I would not expect any to account for a "stutter" while driving with a master warning. Unless your scantool specifically says that it scanned both the hybrid control - high voltage battery ecu's and neither had codes, then it's not fully capable. You can have codes in systems that your scanner can't report.

Read the sticky thread at the top of this forum to learn about different OBD scantool apps and devices. Post 37 is a summary.

You don't mention the airbag light being on, so look at the ABS faults. (I assume that you have ABS or other brake warning lights on?) One code indicates that voltage at the ecu is less than it should be- possible wiring, relay, or even 12V battery problems. The other code indicates a fault for the ABS backup power supply (the black box near the 12V battery or its wiring).

    What were those OBD2 codes?
How often do you change/check the oil in the engine?

When was the last time the inverter coolant pump was replaced? (total miles since)

The steering wheel buttons work and I changed the clockspring around 120k miles I believe. I do hear the ABS pump whirring after we turn the car off and it does stop after. What's the best way to check the 12 volt?

I wish I had written down the battery codes, but I honestly don't remember them anymore. I change and check the oil every 7,500 miles and the coolant pump failed at 105k miles and replaced it! Something new I noticed is how the check engine light is on, not the triangle.

Now would be a good time to rescan with a hybrid compatible scanner. How is the 12v battery, and when was it last replaced?

Here is the workup for DTC C1241 : https://share.qclt.com/%E4%B8%B0%E7%94%B0%E6%99%AE%E7%91%9E%E6%96%AF%E5%8E%9F%E5%8E%82%E8%8B%B1%E6%96%87%E6%89%8B%E5%86%8Cpdf%E6%A0%BC%E5%BC%8F/repair%20manual/04pruisr/05/21avn/cic12414.pdf

Here is the workup for C1378 with INFs (subcodes / detailed codes) 112/113 : https://share.qclt.com/%E4%B8%B0%E7%94%B0%E6%99%AE%E7%91%9E%E6%96%AF%E5%8E%9F%E5%8E%82%E8%8B%B1%E6%96%87%E6%89%8B%E5%86%8Cpdf%E6%A0%BC%E5%BC%8F/Repair%20Manual/04pruisr/05/21avn/cic13784.pdf

Notice how the above workup has two different INFs for DTC C1378, having a compatible device that can tell you the associated INF/subcode/detailed code may help with diagnosing the problem, and potentially save time and money. Many here like to use a mini-vci cable (or better) with techstream (dealership technician software), others may get by with using a quality bluetooth device (mentioned above), and the appropriate app.

Here is the workup for DTC B1650 : https://priuschat.com/attachments/b1650-pdf.13728/

Not sure if this thread is helpful for DTC B1650 : https://priuschat.com/threads/srs-problem.59673

DTC B1660 is an Airbag issue on the passenger side. Check some of the online videos on how to reset it.

The battery is about 5 years old? Maybe it's time to replace it? I did want to ask you weather it's better to use techstream or an OBD with a phone? Which computer works with techstream? Also scanned the Prius for shits and giggles again and now different codes came up... P0300, P0301, P0302. Definitely confused with all these different codes! I don't see the other codes I spoke of earlier though.

I don't know if I post if everyone will get the notification on here. However, after troubleshooting with the OBD checker, I saw the same codes as before which are P0300, P0301, P0303. I saw a post on here about misfires and went to start troubleshooting the issues. I checked and they said to check the spark plugs, well I saw the spark plugs and the 1st and 3rd are full of oil. What does this mean? There was a lot of oil inside the hole and the spark plug itself. I'm hoping someone can help, thank you again!

When did you last replace the spark plugs?

Could be a leaking valve cover gasket, and it may need replacement.

Update for anyone who may have this issue. We replaced the valve cover gasket and was able to get the light removed! No further issues. I don't understand the codes which it threw at me before this though. I never got them back maybe it was a 12v battery issue because we also replaced that earlier this month. I replaced the spark plugs as the old ones had a lot of oil.

Throughout the process we also ran the Dr.Hybrid test and the test said our battery was around 44.17% capacity. Unfortunately, I know the car is on its last legs, but we'll start doing the Prolong Battery Conditioning every two months and hopefully that will let us take another 2 years from the car!

    Thank you everyone!

Good Ideas and write up. I would also plan if you are able to start putting away a "car payment" every month to give you a nice down payment on your next car in 2 years.

Hey! I wanted to ask you, the car was fixed but now the battery is dead... Do you happen to know if it's worth repairing? Do you know any rep brands? The car has 200k miles, and it's slavage and sounds like a rattle because when they tried to steal the catalytic converter...

What OBD2 codes do you have that point towards a dead HV battery?
Best to buy a new HV battery from the dealer (1650+), or try one of the NEW aftermarket options, either NiMH or Lithium. @PriusCamper had talked about being in the area for a lithium battery installation meetup, though not sure when that would happen.

Don't buy an old "reconditioned" battery, though you might be able to find a decent used pack out of a recent wreck/salvage.
Did they actually steal the OEM cat, or is it still intact?

The OEM cat is gone. This was the second CAT and no codes relating to this just makes a weird noise, I'm guessing it's from a piece of metal in there.

Sorry post was all messed up. The OEM cat is gone. This was the second CAT and no codes relating to this just makes a weird noise, I'm guessing it's from a piece of metal in there.Well the fan turns on loud (EV fan) and car is doing some sluggish things and battery drops randomly in bars. However the codes pulled from the car today were c1259 and c1310

Odd, you should have a P0420 stored. What OBD2 device or app are you using?

C1259 (blink code 58 on the ((!)) ECB light) and C1310 (blink code 51 on the skiddy-car VSC light) are two secondary codes and neither code means any problem with the brake system at all: they both tell you about some problem elsewhere in the car (in the hybrid powertrain control) that the brake system just needs to know about (because those systems cooperate to do regeneration). So these codes just mean you need to get the codes that really matter, from the ECUs controlling the hybrid system. (Sadly, that means you do need to arrange access to a scan tool because those ECUs don't do blink codes.)
These symptoms suggest hybrid battery problems. The code reader used is obviously inadequate, as it is missing codes. You could read this thread that reviews a few different code readers and outlines the capabilities of each.

I went ahead and used my Autel MaxiAP200 and got these codes now. I also tried Dr. Prius app and saw this. I can see that one cell has failed but what is the other code that is on my car right now? I see the C2318 code, is this related to the HV battery?

    Thank you! 341152428_620833952864374_7490157180318534947_n.jpg 341265720_532793179056653_9166223168746561475_n.jpg 341163061_2887860024680553_3615721176413361227_n.jpg 341266788_738917434564924_1023472598824646047_n.jpg 341014470_1157895884864721_8151641104299979818_n.jpg
