    Hello Prius Chat,

I parked my 2010 prius with 123K miles in a friends driveway on Wednesday. Came back to the car on Friday and when i started her up the check engine light was on and when the engine tried to spool up, the car auto shut it down. I plugged my Veepak OBD-2 code reader into it and I got P2118 and hybrid system. Hybrid system I'm assuming is from the car going into fail safe mode. The hybrid battery scored very high on dr prius app not too long ago. My 12v battery as measure this morning after sitting over night directly from the battery was like 11.8 or so. it was 12.23 yesterday from the post in the engine bay. My map sensor was getting in the 11's last night as well.

I changed the ETCS fuse even tho the old one looked fine. I cleaned the throttle body quite well but codes still popped up even after that. I had a mobile tech come and we checked voltages on a few things and followed the 7 page instructions on how to diagnose. We were getting about 3.8-4.5 volts on the connector that connects directly to the throlle body. The +BM on A57 of the ECM was about 10.8 and we were getting 0 voltages from E1 and ME01 on the D28. We were geting ohms of like .04 or something like that for E1 and ME01. The mobile guy thinks it is something between the 12v battery and connector into the ECM under the hood so either the wires or the connectors or something like that. He didnt feel comfortable trying to get into the weeds on that so I currently have it a the Toyota Dealer in Lakewood, Fl. I live in wisconsin and am on a road trip so not in a great position.

Do you think putting a new 12v battery in would solve the problem? The fusebox itself looks pretty dirty and a little corroded but A57 and D28 both looked in pretty good condition. The A57 connector definitly looks non-original. Ziptied and taped where the wires hit the connector. Bought the car on facebook in aug 2021 with 90K miles. Has been a great car since over the 33k miles of city stuff but also some pretty intense road tripping all over the usa. Would love any guidance. Toyota will give diagnosis by end of day today (saturday, jan 21, 2023) or Monday.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

if the car made 'ready', it's not the 12v, will it make ready again? the voltage is a bit low.

if it does make ready, check the voltage to see if the inverter is charging it

If i clear the codes, the car will go into ready and the engine spools up but hits fail safe mode or something and the car immediately turns the engine off. Car is at the toyota dealer we will see what they say on monday.

How would i hypotheitcally check to see if 12v is getting charged if engine cant turn on due to bad voltage/fail safe mode?

    thanks again prius chat.

from the numbers in first quote, sounds like it is. How old’s the battery?

Assuming it’s getting on, I’d try a new battery first.

if you have the voltmeter on the battery or jump point, when it makes ready, it should jump up to 14 or so.
what is the battery level on the dash? gas level?

i'm wondering if the veepeak is telling you everything you need to know.

you can get a free load test at auto zone

For DIY battery assesment, something like Solar BA9 is good.

Prius is now at Gettel toyota dealer in Lakewood, Fl. I do not know how old the battery is - would Toyota let me take the battery somewhere to load test it or will they do it that? I guess my biggest concern is them saying I need a wire harness or something else ongodly expensive when a simple boost of the current 12v or swapping in a different one may solve the problem. When I bought it off the guy on Facebook he said he had recently replaced it but never physically checked the battery. I don't know if I ever tested the voltage when the car was in ready once the engine wouldnt turn. if i had just double clicked the start button without touching brake, would 12v jump to 14v or only when in ready mode with brake pushed down?

They are diagnosing it on Monday. I had a few open recalls as well so they are doing those, they gave me a loaner car for the interim. I cant be stuck in Florida forever as I am on a road trip and will eventually need to make it back to Wisconsin ha.

    Hello,

Toyota is saying replace ecm for a total of 1491 out the door. Should i pay the 190 diagnose fee and replace with used one? How hard is it to put in used ecm? Cheers. Problem is i am stuck down here in florida. Any help would be appreciated. Attached is techstream photo from toyota. By +bm is super low. @Mendel Leisk @bisco

i don't think that can be answered without following the manuals troubleshooting.

you could certainly take a whack at it. i bet the dealer won't even guarantee that will fix it
