So. We own a couple Gen 2 Prii. Both 2008. They wont last forever and I'm trying to plan for long term. Keep them both going for another few years before buying anything in this economy. But I find myself looking for a temp car should one be totalled. After the 2008 and after reading about Gen 3 head gaskets and really wanting to make the jump to a Prime The Rav 4Prime and BZ4X are 48K and 50K. which is a bit much Model Y is 52K and on the horizon for the wife. A used Model S runs 30K (2015 Model S) Im need 5 seats and plug in. So I find myself looking at a 2020 Prius Prime Limited. 31K but not the cargo of a Model Y. Or depending on the damage...I could by a new engine, Hybrid Battery, ABS Module and paint job for any Gen 2 2009 shell that I can find for like $15K. I just don't want to have to be stuck with an insurance check for a totalled Gen 2 and then have to start my research. My bailout might be a loaded Camry Hybrid. But I would miss the hatchback....
What do you all think? It's similar to my Gen 2 Range Rover 3rd and 4th Gen were garbage and the new 5th gen is out of my price range and ugly.....might as well invest in a Tesla Plaid.....but no hatchback............so BLECH.

Nah I buy another gen too for next to nothing. Transfer my good parts off the car that is supposedly going to hell or gotten wrecked or whatever's happened New hybrid battery all that stuff over to the new to me other Gen 2 and keep getting it No there's a lot of these cars out there and really good shape with a small dent in the back that have been totaled by insurance and are sitting places ready to be scooped up with all the maintenance up to date and been well kept some even owned by old people they're just sitting You know why because everybody thinks like this post oh it's too old blah blah blah these cars make 600k pretty easily so you're one with $140,000 or 160 210 You're just broken in good You're looking for things to get out of the car which is what people start doing You don't want to put a break accumulator or change an engine if it blows up 1 NZ engines are near free I've 4 of em sitting here ready to go. I could have more if I wanted but I have to keep my wants desires and needs in check. Interior parts and all that last few of these I bought were like 600 bux . Many states you can get a rider from DMV for chk lite on I've done it. All a process . I own 2 gen3 including a persona the women drive those thankfully.replaced engine and trans in a gen3 about 2300 total and I did not do it. JDM parts were used . I can't do anything for the cost of keeping my Gen 2 on the road. Is no possible. Anything I go and look at from Gen 3 2010 on up is going to cost more money than it will ever keep to keep my Gen 2 running any of them so I don't do it most people don't even see again to in their peripheral vision It doesn't exist to them it's an old piece of excrement to most people That's just how I like it No one has any interest in it except unfortunately the catalytic converter thieves which is not really ramping around here because in the county I live in I can have a check engine light and the PO420 code and still get inspected All I get is a safety no emissions Orange county North Carolina.

it's a tough decision i hope you don't have to make. if i were forced to because of a total, i would look for a 2016 to tide me over until the market for gen5 is realistic

Like bisco says, a 2016 is probably the next rung on the ladder if you want to avoid the gen 3 problems.

The prices you mention are all over the place - 48k, 50k, 52k, 30k, 31k, 15k..... You might get better advice if people knew your actual budget?

YEAH. I hear you on the budget. Truth is and the problem is I can buy and afford anything. But If I dump more in a car then that is less on family vacations, future furniture and educational payments for my child. Cheaper cars mean more money for everything else...so I lean towards them. To me a car is a tool and I don't spend enough time driving on to justify a super expensive one. So I agree with Bisco on a tide me over car of a 2016 Prius with as many low miles as possible for me. A 7 passenger Model Y for the wife would be a better investment as my car is to travel to the airport for work and run errands......So on one end. I could by a motorcycle with a sidecar and buy my wife the 7 Passenger Model X or Y. But I do like Air Con and heated seats...LOL. I agree. a 2016 prius would fit the bill for now until the market clears up a bit. Which I could sell without a problem if need be. But with only 120k and 122K on our 08's i'm not looking to replace them until I have too. I appreciate the help gents. Thanks

Hello. Curious why a 2016 and not 2017 or 2018? Thank you in advance.

I think is just to keep the price as low as possible hence the older 2016 should cost less. and a 2016 eco is probably the cheapest. I did find a 2016 Four with a sunroof and HUD for $25K which is reasonable. But for $30 I've seen older Model S but with 218 miles of range......but I'd be all electric like I wanted.
I guess it's a matter of what is available at the time should it get totalled. I'll just jump off that bridge when the day comes.

I try to keep my needs wants and desires and check. And I realize that a car is a tool like a nail gun or a hammer when it does wear out it's time to make choices to do something else. The idea is to get where you're going and get out of the car we don't want to live in it generally it's a tool it's not an investment it's not going to return anything to me when I'm finished with it because when I'm finished with it it will be dead there may be some parts on it that I can transfer over to another like same car but it will be basically dead like when the handle breaks on a hammer or all the rubber comes off whatever you get another one so you can what keep working. A car is not something that I would use to try to keep up with the Joneses. But to some like adolescents and younger folks vehicles are some sort of status symbol course generally then parents are paying.

    I get it  .

My sentiments also. I've never been a "new car" guy. Let someone else take the depreciation hit instead.;)
