just wondering if it is common practice to check the fan when replacing the traction battery? I decided to check it today after the problem we had with the RTOD this week, I paid almost 3k to get the battery and have had numerous issues since they did the work and I decided to check things out today and the fan, omg, it looks terrible, layers of dust on the fins and hair! It just seems that it couldn't have been cleaned two years ago. The car is normally used for commuter car by my husband now.

I should add that this business was REALLY pushing us hard to donate the car to them..

Here is a picture before I vacuumed out hair and then the rest on a plate after using a small oil paint brush to clean the fins. fortunately I had 12v battery and tested and it still works.

Yes, a reputable repair shop would have cleaned the fan. Unfortunately your experience shows that they were more interested in making a quick dollar. For $3000 a Toyota dealer would have installed a brand new battery, hopefully that is what you received for your $3000.

Not Toyota dealer, they couldn't get me in at the time for a few weeks, went to a shop that claimed they could refurbish the existing (they had access to something to recondition, I don't remember what it was called), then said too bad of shape and sold us refurbished. They also left the 12v battery cables loose, causing us other issues, the forum helped me figure that out and i tightened them and it stopped turning off on us.

Crap! Well you're going to try and go on that battery as far as you can $3,000 damn I thought those days were over but that depends on location and all that sort of thing they can get you into a panic mode make you feel you have to do something that you're not real sure of but they are. I'm sorry that happened to you I hate it when people do things like that.

Thanks, it has been a nightmare. BTW, I just cleaned the fan and reinstalled it and ran Dr. Prius again, this time got error P0A0D, I reset the traction battery interlock switch, cleared the code, disconnected the 12v battery for 5 min and it cleared it. I still think it feels too loose though. I'm going to youtube installing the traction battery and hope I can figure it out. Thanks for all the help, wish me luck.

I paid extra for full car inspection, they didn't mention anything about the fan needing to be cleaned, I would have done it to preserve the battery, they came up with tons of ticky tacky things they wanted to fix though, all that I could do myself and I declined.

If the it to which you refer is the battery terminal bracket, then loosen the bolt right off, spread apart the clamp with a small pry bar or large screwdriver, then ensure the clamp goes all the way to the bottom and retighten. Use the closed end of a box wrench or a socket to ensure you avoid 'levering' the clamp up when you tighten the bolt.

Yes. This exactly. Mine had this problem and was only solved when I pryed it open and started the clamp process all over again. Please let us know the name of the shop so others can avoid their shoddy work. Reputation is everything in business...Let the better shops prevail!.

Thanks, at this point I've determined that the battery is bad also after running Dr Prius. So, I'm going to replace it now through the dealership with a new battery, I think that the fan wasn't working and it overheated because they didn't clean it (or even tell me it needed cleaning). It was Sturken Auto in San Jose. I won't go there because after seeing the missing clips etc I don't trust them, I'd rather have a NEW battery instead of a used one. Nancy

Agreed. On the NEW. Let us know what the dealership charges. At Toyota of Olathe I can get a new battery for DIY install for about $2,100K out the door which is not to bad. There is a core charge however that you get back. I understand that the old modules are worth about $400

They agreed to lower to $2,600 (installed) for me, (originally I was quoted a lower price earlier this a.m. and the $2,900 was something I would negotiate for lowering, still a little more than I was quoted earlier, but they are also giving me a loaner car), but we are in San Jose. It's worth the price to have it done and over.
