    Okay.

So when I quote others' posts with the broken image link icon, and can see it in the text field, it is because I stumbled across that site hosting the image at some point?

It might be that, or it might be down to the exact policies on that other site.

I've noticed PriusChat actually uses a proxying mechanism when you include an image link offsite. When you save your post, the PriusChat server goes and grabs its own copy of the remote image, and later if you look in your post as displayed, the image link is actually to the copy on priuschat.com.

Ironically, that's a technique likely added to appeal to admins of other sites who don't like the bandwidth hit of all PriusChat readers' personal browsers coming to their site for the image. They only served the one copy and then it's on PriusChat's bandwidth. At the same time, it doesn't appeal to admins of other sites who don't like their content copied. So the server may deny it, and then PriusChat's proxy logic records that it got denied service when it went for the copy, and serves you the no-image image instead.

But I think when you go to edit the post, it puts the original image URL back (so you're not wondering about the priuschat.com/proxy.php and hash parts), and then depending on the other site's policies, it may serve the image to your browser.

I've found this to be an increasing problem over the last couple of months. I've taken to saving the image I want to use and then uploading it, rather than inserting a picture from the Internet as I used to.

I screenshot what I want to re-use. That way I get some degree of scale control and optimizations via cropping.

Then I upload the screenshot to priuschat and let them worry about their own image hosting.

Anyway, we should get this conversation back onto topic. There has been some serious drift here.

Have you seen the latest news photograph of the USAF shooting down one of the balloons? It's spectacular.

    Oh you kids

It may have upped from a place starting with Hai and ending with nan. It may have been intended to sniff a place starting with Tai and ending with wan. But elsewhere it went, and not to lose an opportunity...

    Source: NASA balloon

NASA scientists launched a football field-sized balloon Saturday from a remote area of New Zealand that the agency said was carrying a Super-pressure Balloon-borne Imaging Telescope (SuperBIT), which will travel around the Southern Hemisphere.

The launch of the 18.8-million-cubic-foot super-pressure balloon was part of a test mission that the agency hopes will be successful in cutting down costs by avoiding future rocket launches.

After the launch, the balloon ascended towards the stratosphere, where upper levels winds were expected to help propel the flying laboratory around the globe for at least 100 days. According to NOAA, the stratosphere layer extends from around 10 miles to 31 miles above Earth's surface.
    . . .
You can track the balloon’s movements in real-time here at csbf.nasa.gov.

That's the ground photo propaganda. It'll turn around after launch. :sneaky:

Maybe we should invite some representatives from China and other potential unfriendlies they just might overfly, to inspect or at least view it, and witness launches? To help reduce chances of these science projects being shot down later, in case the pre-announcements and public tracking are not adequate for them.

This project appears to be aimed to about 120,000 feet elevation (40km), far higher than the unannounced ones we shot down.

That's because each intends to remove as much of the murky atmosphere as possible from itself and the intended target.

I'm a great believer in open aviation communication and coordination which the Chinese balloon failed.
