P0A80 But Drives Perfectly

    Hello!


    I posted previously, about 2 weeks ago, about some battery troubles I had. Basically, I got the P0A80 code on my 2010 Prius but I just had to clean the heavily corroded battery and it worked perfectly again.


    I installed the battery 6 days ago and it ran perfectly, even while going 30 minutes on the highway to work everyday, until yesterday I put the interior back together. For those 6 days I just had the battery and fan installed, just the absolute bare bones. I put the interior back together myself, without help of my brother who helped me with the battery, which may have caused problems.


    Today after around 2 hours of driving I turned my car on again and in less than a minute the "Check Hybrid System" displayed popped up and the battery fan started running very loud.


    I ended up driving it to get the codes checked but it drove basically perfect unlike the previous time this display showed, just except for the fan. The codes read P3017 and P0A80. This is a little weird because a week prior I had tested the voltages and every single cell either read 7.7 or 7.8, including the module block 7.


    Today is a hot day, going upwards of 90 degrees Fahrenheit while I drove it, would this be a cause of it? Would I have to take out the battery again or is there something else that could trigger it?

    Generally when you have the full blast fan going on the battery computer thinks something is wrong and it's putting on the fan thinking that it's either charging itself to death or the battery is getting hot because it's going to try and charge it until it can't anymore or whatever something's going on back there with the battery when I had that full fan all the time it was just a matter of days and it had to come out of there I drove around for a couple of days with that fan on full blast and was running mostly on the engine getting about 36 mi to the gallon The minute I drove up to the dealer and change the battery went right up to 47 miles to the gallon and no more purple bars or magenta bars on the display ever so far

    Sounds like you are being warned of impending battery failure. You can keep nursing it along like that for a while, but get ready for replacement.

    High temps don't help at all. Whatever you can do to keep the cabin cool will help you stretch the last bit of life out of that battery.

    Trouble code P3017 means that one or both of the modules in block 7 are weak. You need to load test those 2 modules to see which one or both of the modules are weak and buy replacement module(s) to replace the weak one(s).

    Did you use the air conditioning? If so, that puts additional stress on the hybrid battery and may have been enough stress to trigger the trouble codes.

    Read post #2 & #3 in your original thread that you created.

    EDIT: In your original thread, you said that you cleaned corrosion off the buss bars. Did you remove the nuts on the terminal of the modules? If so, did you torque all the nuts to 48 in-pounds when they were put back on?

    Oh well, it looks like my time is coming.
    Sunday coming from my brother in law I saw the battery down to one bar and then the engine running more than usual.
    Yesterday morning scanning for codes and found this.

    No lights in dasboard and for now code is Pending but I guess that sooner or later I need a new traction battery.
    Spoke at our local dealership and it will be around $2600 (labour included).
    14 years and 200k miles seems enough for original traction battery. :)

    I've s 2010 same . 2 yrs I put on that junkyard battery and about 75K miles for like 500 bux

    Have you tried the Prolong system? It's certainly worked for me.
    I ran it through the full cycles Friday-Sunday and it has certainly made a difference.
    I've never gotten any codes. I started using when I notice it sitting at 2 bars a lot longer
    and then suddenly going to 3 and quickly to four. Same with discharge. Now it's a
    smooth steady charge/discharge.
    I'm also able to say in EV mode a lot longer.

    Yep, same simptoms here too.
    I'm from Romania so nobody heard about Prolong. :(
    I like the car, never had any problems with it and I guess it deserves a new traction battery after those years and miles.
    So when code will be permanent I'll change the battery.

    I've got a Gen 3 doing the same thing right now except the battery indicator on the MFD or the dash pretty much stays one bar below the top like it always has been. And the code is stored or pending or whatever It's not putting on the check engine light or the red triangle or anything so far. This is also a junkyard battery that's about 2 years old and 50,000 plus miles on it more like 75 used for Uber and all that pandemic nonsense.
