I have a Gen 2 2008 Prius and just a couple days ago right after a mile driving away from an oil change my car gave a bunch of warning lights and then not too long later the engine cut off and it refuses to shift into drive or reverse anymore. Had to be towed home. After checking error codes with an OBD scanner it looks like hybrid batteries are failing. I would like help confirming the diagnosis here so I don't accidentally go through the trouble of ordering a new set and its something else entirely. I plan on calling a third party like Greentec Auto or the toyata dealership near me, but also would not mind hearing advice on where to go and the expected labor cost. I'm about an hour north of Seattle if anyone knows the area. Only major consideration is my car won't move itself so it either needs to be towed or serviced at home. Anyway here are all the relevant images and codes I got but if anything is missing let me know.

Recent thing that may matter is that I had to replace the failing 12v battery maybe a week ago (got like 8 mpg boost since then, didn't know that was a thing) but also while doing so I discovered that I have a common leak issue that filled the spare wheel well and 12v battery compartment with maybe 2 inches of water. I just patched it with silcone sealant at where most videos say is the common point of failure at the top corners of the trunk door under the trim but we'll see if that worked. Could that have damaged the hybrid battery? I have no idea how long this was the case, could've been years for all I know. Thanks in advance.

Yes before proceeding further you need to find somebody with tech stream the software for Toyota and read the trouble codes and any subcodes A leak in the trunk very commonly gets to the hybrid battery and its case and water can find its way in there and it can wreak havoc and cause lights and all kinds of nonsense so you kind of want to try and rule that out while you have possession of the vehicle and then if you're going to order cells for you're HV battery . You need to talk to the battery rebuilders and see if you were to bring them 28 new sales could they put you together a rack with new bus bars and whatever it is you're going to provide new nuts the fancy nuts that connect better whatever and take that all to a battery rebuilding kind of guy somebody more private than one of the franchises like the green tecand beans and all that are like franchises and they have by-laws and mission statements and all this nonsense in place that make them can't do businesses type of affairs so if you find somebody who's more private who may be works on more of the EV and hybrid battery type markets like repairing Teslas and lefs and what have you. You stand a better chance of somebody who was going to cooperate with you bringing in 28 new cells . And bars nuts and whatever. The franchise people are going to give you a bunch of excuses because they want to just mark everything up 60% or whatever they're doing so they're not going to be so good about it. But to be honest about it even the Spanish guys are doing this kind of work down in East LA now so I'm on the East Coast I can't really help you with places that well.

Yeah any family/friends I know who work on cars at all are unfamiliar with EVs and Hybrids. Not sure what a rebuild would mean, but I do have nearly 200k miles so I figured its probably time for a full new battery isn't it?

Yeah oil seemed good, I checked asap cause I heard Prius's can sometimes throw the red triangle cause of overfill. The receipt shows 3.9 quarts and checking the dipstick its maybe slightly above the top dot but that should be fine.

You're in Washington State I would think there should be some EV hybrid battery folks out there and by other work I've had done out in Oregon and Washington and the people I know out there would probably be a pretty bang-up shop too so I don't know anybody I'll ask one of my friends but she's driving a complete electric leaf I think or something doesn't really go anywhere mostly rides bikes and human-powered vehicles and all this kind of nonsense.

Yeah I could probably find some local shops who can get the work done, just I don't have any personal connections is all. Main thing is I wanted to confirm the problem/solution before calling around to get a mechanic to come over or tow the vehicle to a shop.

I just put a brand new battery in my '09 about 5 months ago and to be totally honest about it I would recommend you do the same You can fiddle fart around with rebuilding batteries and having people do all this labor and nuts and bus bars and blah blah blah But at the end of the day you don't rebuild d cells for your maglite flashlight You don't rebuild batteries for your more important transportation I wouldn't think. That being said I did buy a rebuilt remanufactured by a place called the hybrid Doctor up around Fairfax Virginia He was a really nice guy from South America really cool dude I would suggest you give him a ring He advertises all over the internet they drive little white with green and black logo Prius is it say the hybrid doctor on the side of them I actually bought a rack of cells from him supposedly balanced it within three Delta blah blah blah all the buzzwords I have not had one ounce of trouble with that rebuilt battery for over a year It is run rock solid in my wife's generation 3 and I installed it The rack from the hybrid doctor was $640 and then the shipping to get that to me I don't remember what that was and he sent boxes for me to put my old silver battery plates in and send them back to him which I did I highly recommend him but with your distance shipping may be prohibitive I don't know

I think I'll start calling around soon to get a mechanic over and start getting quotes. I hope its not much more than 3k total cause the car was only worth around 4k last I checked and that was 20k miles ago. I might even consider doing the work myself if it comes down to it after watching Chrisfixits video it seems within my capability. Main thing about that is a lack of tools + garage to work in but thats a personal problem I'll figure out.

Either way like you said I need to get the dealership or a shop that has Techstream to do a house call and diagnose it proper before finalizing what I want to do. Would be a shame to order a battery and find out its something else entirely or in addition. Its going to be about 1k for a remanufacture or 2k for all new.
