because that's how they did it with the Rav4Prime, how they're doing it wih the bz4x.

I'm SPECULATING Toyota would have said something, so as not to get people's hopes up, but might be wrong.

Anybody see anything on the topic?

I don't see it happening. The production volume is too low to warrant it, and it means taking work away from their Japanese workers. Toyota had planned to start Prius production in North America before the 2008 Recession. Plans changed for obvious reasons. I think the that line makes Rav4's now. Prius sales have steadily declined here since then.

Based on the numbers in the Prime Japan release, the Primes arriving here might only be 10% of the Prius numbers. With small volumes, it could be cheaper for Toyota to just discount the car than paying for a local factory to get the incentives.

Canada’s a bit different market. Phev and bev vehicles don’t miss out on federal rebates based on where they’re built. But BC and Quebec have additional rebates for the consumer. More importantly, penalties to the manufacturers that don’t sell enough 0 emission vehicles. It’s why RAV4 Primes arrived in those provinces in 2020, the rest of Canada 2021, and the same story with the bz4x

Without an assembly point requirement to the incentives, there is less reason to build the Prius here.
The threat of ZEV penalties is why the old Prime was deeply discounted in the US Northeast. Toyota will do that again if they need credits, and the car isn't selling.

Toyota already had plants in North America churning out hundreds of thousands of ICE and hybrid Rav4's. Having some of the output be Primes is a small investment. There is no factory here already making the Prius, and the production amounts of the PP look to be far too low to support setting up a line just for it. Toyota's announcement on the PP's release in Japan gave a monthly production amount of 450. The Prius is 4200 in comparison. The annual target for Prius sales in the US is 35 to 36 thousand, which is already higher than what the car sold before the pandemic.

Japan is only getting a top trim PHV. I'm thinking NA will get more than what they plan for Japan, but they are also shipping PHVs for Europe. We will be very lucky to see 20k this year. Under 10k is more likely. Circling back to the original topic, this means moving production for such volumes is too expensive. Toyota is more likely to move some to Europe to avoid the import tax that hampers the plug in's sales.

If youre saying youre not expecting the Prius, or the Prius Prime to be a big seller in the US I would agree.

In CANADA the PRIMES get a $5000 federal rebate, and more from the provinces, so I think they’ll do better here than they would in the US, as a % of sales.

Assuming Toyota’s prepared to supply them to canada!

I think supply is going to be an issue. Still hasn't improved much for the Rav4 Prime.

Clarification- BC and Quebec are the provinces that also provide rebates

So do Yukon, NB, NS, PEI and Nfld.

But yes if there’s a limited supply, it’ll likely go to the two provinces with the highest uptake in plug-in vehicles - BC and QC.

I was told by my Ontario-based salesperson that their dealership was allotted 12 Primes for 2023. WHEN in the year they'll get those is unclear. You will hear from me when I get mine, as I'm #2 on the list.

Yes, please keep us posted. Hopefully your dealer will keep you informed and you can pass on some info here on the forum!

That’s good to hear, though I would be surprised if dealerships already have allotment info if the vehicle has not yet been officially announced yet? o_O

I should be similarly near the top of the list at my dealership (Milton Toyota), as I have had a deposit down for a Prius Prime since May 2022, and was told it would carry over to a 2023. (y) Last I asked, I got an unclear answer about ‘position’ but he did tell me I was close to the top. He suggested allocation is somewhat “random”, not filling specific orders, but filling allocation with whatever is built, and the dealership just goes down the list offering the package/colours coming based on waitlist order. No idea how accurate this info is…

As soon as the Prime is formally announced and pricing is available I intend to go back to my sales guy to update any necessary paperwork.(y)

Yeah I’ve noticed Toyota Canada changed the way they order cars. No idea when they changed it but it was already this way when we were looking for our 2016. Rather than build-to-order, they would doing it US style with allocations and just matching the order with the allocation. So if you chose something that isn’t as popular, someone else could get the car before you even though they’re much further down the list. Kinda annoying. For the west coast, it’s pretty much white or red and the occasional grey or black. Good luck with Blue Magnetism or Titanium Blonde or Classic Silver.

Posted this in another thread. We ordered May 21, 2022. I was informed yesterday that our 2023 Prius Prime XSE Premium in Guardian Grey will be at the dealership in Ontario between May 30-June 3.

Nice! That is around the same time I put my deposit, here in Milton. :)

Was Grey your first paint choice, or that is just the one that is coming in? Have never been a big fan of neutral “non-colours” like grey (and silver, etc) however I did see one in that shade at the car show and it was nice, seems to have a slight blue tint to it? Congrats.

Thanks! When we put our deposit down, we were led to believe that we'd be getting the previous generation. We requested the "loaded" version in grey. Turns out that they translated that to match the new generation. We were willing to take whatever they offered and we were very to happy to hear that they matched up exactly what we wanted. I'll be frank, I liked the previous grey better, but colour isn't that important to us and I'm sure that the guardian grey will grow on us :)

That’s great. :) I asked for Blue Magnetism in loaded trim, and I did verbally tell my guy I would prefer yellow (or blue)… we’ll see what happens. Also, not dead set on a colour.
