I bet that's not the ski jump and this is.

What did you buy, just the stator?

Neither a stator nor a rotor can be called a "step motor" on its own. :) A step motor is both pieces.

I bought the EGR valve and gaskets. I have to open it again and see if it’s got the motor or not. Can you confirm the ski jump is shot from that last photo? Looks like it’s dead to me but I’m monitoring the egr steps as I drive and it’s working.

New map sensor stopped the rough start ,idle acceleration, hesitation, and knocking while running. There haven't been any misfires. The mpg rose to 48. However, p0401 did return. Going to swap in the new egr again and see if that corrects the issue. If that doesn't do it this its time to puff black and mild through

Does anyone know the correct wrench size for the pcv valve? I've been able to put a 7/8" standard on it but I haven't attempted to replace it out of fear of stripping or breaking. Aftermarket or okay or does it definitely have to be oem?

A new felpro gasket got installed on the intake manifold and throttle body. I cleaned the air ports out on the engine and sanded carbon off the block. With 220 paper. The EGR pipe to intake gasket was changed. The new EGR that was purchased off eBay was put back in. The only gasket that hasn’t been changed is at the EGR valve to cooler connection. Map sensor is working properly EGR is working properly. P0401 came back so this one’s unrelated to the air and exhaust system possibly. Might be p0403 isn’t coming up but that’s making the EGR work improperly.

Finally got the stripped screw out. This is what I see Inside. @ChapmanF This can't be right, correct?

Hey, izzat one of the new valves? That's a completely different look from the ones I'm familiar with.

The rotor would have to be behind that plate that came out with the stator, and has the two tabs at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock to keep it from turning. Can that be lifted out?

It most likely can but I don’t want to toy with it. If this design doesn’t work properly then I guess I need to get a used one. Do you agree? It functions differently than the original egr valve in that it goes to 33 steps almost in a second whereas I see the original egr spin the step numbers up quickly on the scan tool.

when the intake gasket was installed it wasn’t sitting properly and got sucked into the engine at ignition. Parts guys got a hoot out of me saying that when I went into buy a new one all flustered. I got immediate misfires in cylinder 3 and 4. Took the intake off and was able to reach the gasket pieces lodged in the cylinder with needle nose pliers. the coolant level shot up in the degas bottle with the intake manifold off and I’ve been getting a cold start misfire in cylinders 3 and 4. Might have a new head gasket failure. I’d been getting pressure in the degas bottle since cutting the jiggle pin. Thought the pressure was the result of that but nope. Will see if the misfires continue. But those two point to another failure.

My understanding is the valves are functionally equivalent. The new construction may have improved something, less susceptibility to ski-jump mashing for example. But if you don't want to toy with that new one or keep it, I'd be happy to toy with it.

In the TSB that announced the new one, there was also a plug for a later version of the ECM firmware. But there's a plug for the same later firmware version in a different TSB about an intake manifold, and the manifold TSB doesn't say you need the new valve, and the valve TSB doesn't say you need the new manifold. So from that I think the firmware has general improvements but doesn't strictly have to be paired with either the new valve or the new manifold.

Interesting what you noticed about the time to go to 33 steps. I would have to see what you were seeing in more detail.

Did you update the firmware? If not, I expect what you saw was an artifact of measurement. The valve does not give any progress feedback, and the ECM just dead-reckons its position, sending step pulses at a certain rate. If they made a whizbang new faster-moving valve, the ECM would have no way to know that, and would still move it at the original speed.

The dealership did the software update and charged me their rate. I don’t know if it was the specific firmware plug for the valve. They made me sign a waiver stating i understand that it may not get rid of the code (it didn’t).So I’m out of ideas from the service manual. Gotta look at the service procedure again.

all the other threads I’ve read on this subject didn’t really have sensible conclusions. I saw one comment on a video about the code that said the code was fixed by bypassing the heat exchanger because of a coolant leak. wondering if cutting the jiggle pin decreased the coolant temp threshold so much that it throws off the EGR calculations of when to open and close the valve? Or EGR/VVT monitor?

I must never have looked at that photo in that March 28 post. Yes, that photo shows the ski jump inside of that rotor, and yes, that ski jump has a big fat rut mashed all the way through it.

If you have Techstream, on the Health Check page you can see the firmware version (they call it "calibration ID") for the Engine and ECT system; then we'll know if it's the version they touted in the valve TSB.

I don’t have tech stream. If anyone wants to share their login that’d be great.

I wonder if any of the other scan tool alternatives are able to show calibration IDs. Maybe @mr_guy_mann knows?

@ChapmanF would the 2016 eGR valve work on a 2010 cooler subassembly?

I believe it electrically works the same way. I can't predict any of the practical matters, like the bolt holes lining up. It is probably somewhat oversized for the higher-pressure EGR used in Gen 3. I believe there are coolant hose nipples on it.

Toyota updated the intake manifold in a TSB? I think that’s one of the next things to investigate.

Stealership has no record of what firmware version they updated the ecu with. They have to go back to a log and print out a report to see the info. I’m sure that report is in the same gsa warehouse that was shown at the end frame of Raiders of the lost Ark. top men are looking into it….who? Top. men.

Yes but: the original intake manifold, clean and undamaged, should not be causing problems. The new one revised the EGR passages (I'm speculating, based on a few low-res pics I saw), presumably to "fix" the EGR clogging.

The intake manifold is damaged. The top bolt locations had broken bolts that I tried to drill out. Friend of mine that’s a mechanic sealed the holes with jb weld.

If I update the intake maybe that’ll correct the issue but I think installing an oil can is a better use of money.
