Replaced with cylindrical cells: 68.8MPG

    There is a YouTube creator, ChrisFix, that works on a variety of things on cars. Basically, he tries to make things simple for repairs and such. He bought a used 3rd gen with a dead battery. How he got it for so cheap and with the car looking so pristine I have doubts - but regardless it's a great video and the most in-depth I've seen yet.

    At the end he takes a 21 mile trip and returns over 65MPG with very conservative driving. I've been sold on those new cylindrical cells for awhile now hearing about others that have installed them. I have a 2011 that's about due for the new battery. Anyway, check out the video.

    If only the head gasket last at least half the life of the replaced battery, then it’ll be financially worth the replacement swap.

    There is no better battery replacement.

    What are the cylinders made of? Nimh? If so how would that make any difference?

    Unless they are capable of accepting more amps when charging but thats all regulated by your HV controller, so unless you changed that too, those mpg werent long enough to get proper results.

    This battery yielded about 10 more mpgs than project lithium reported average users results!!! Let me get a referral code for us in here!

    Wow 10 more mpgs than the Lithium??

    So it gives 20 mpgs more than OEM??

    Because the Lithium pack has been giving 10+ mpgs more than OEM since it came out.

    This battery puts out 10 more mpgs than lithium project, you just stated it yourself above. Checkmate!!!

    No grit, I did not state that, notice the question marks please.

    But...if there has been years of R&D and plenty of tester and customers for that HV battery then Im sure they would chime in and show and tell us all about those extra 20 mpgs they are getting with that pack.

    You will however find plenty of users of the Lithium pack saying they are getting those extra 10 mpgs with theirs.

    Odds are the cells were overcharged from the factory. Any decent battery can get 65mpg for short distances on level ground or better yet with a downslope. Those cells will give almost identical results as a new Toyota battery.

    Of course he said he planned to flip it for a two or three grand profit. He has another recent video on flipping as well.

    Most likely he was sponsored by the vendor. The kit price is a little high.

    After he installed the battery he did a test before putting the rest of the car back together, the battery was at about 25% charge. He did say he used every trick to get that 68mpg, and that a normal expectation will be 40-50 which is in line with what others are getting. Also yes, he mentioned in the beginning he was sponsored by the vendor. And yeah, that place is a little on the expensive side.

    Sounds about right. The only real way to increase mpg is to alter the engine or electric motor, which Toyota has been doing for the newer models of hybrids. A lot of testing and improvements to the design gets made to squeeze like 10% efficiency.

    It depends. I think if you increase the battery capacity and spend a lot of time driving with the ICE off then that's the theory behind getting more MPG. On the highway it's not going to make much difference.

    21 miles is a stupidly low amount of data and I feel like that's just about the max MPG I could get going over 20 miles if I could map my own route at the right time of day, which is what I'd be doing for a sponsor.

    How are the cylindrical cells doing anyways? Are there long term users on here at this point?

    It'd be interesting to see how it fares, say a year from now, if he hangs onto it for a while. Maybe he'll do a follow-up video.

    Stats can be deceiving. Today after a fill on a 283,000 mile v, Toyota cells and excessive oil consumption. I had to wait for an uphill to get it off 99.9 mpg.

    Not sure about your question. The v wagon has a different dashboard but the above avg mpg was created by resetting Trip A averages to zero after a fill up. Then picking an easy route. Just like Chrisfix in his video.
